Pokémon Scarlet and Violet gym rematch guide: teams, weaknesses, and more

Scarlet Pokemon and Violet offers trainers three unique missions to traverse the new region of Paldea. This not only adds variety, but also a lot more content to do after completing any task. One of those main quests is the famous journey where one can defeat all eight Gym Leaders, collect their badges, defeat the Elite Four, and become the regional champion of the Pokémon League. That’s been the main goal of almost every major Pokemon game, and it’s just as fun to end this generation as it was before.

However, once you’ve done all of that, you may not be able to challenge your opponents to a fight in Paldea. However, you won’t have to start your whole adventure over again to face off against your favorite Gym Leaders once again. As long as you get all the badges, beat the Elite Four, and become the champion, you’ll have the ability to challenge all the gym leaders to a rematch. However, this is not simply a replay of your first fight with them. Each Gym Leader is much stronger the second time around, so here’s how you can best prepare for the rematch in Scarlet Pokemon and Violet.

To face any gym leader again, simply return to their gym and talk to them to start the battle.

Cortondo Gym (bug type)

The bug gym manager apologizes.

Katy is back and has managed to turn the Bug types into a real threat. She is the lowest level Gym Leader you can face, just like she was the lowest level Gym Leader the first time. Here’s his new and improved Pokemon roster:

  • Lokix: level 65 (bug/dark type)
  • Fortitude — Level 65 (Beetle/Steel-Type)
  • Heracross: Level 65 (Bug/Battle Type)
  • Spidops — Level 65 (bug type)
  • Urasring — Level 66 (Normal type with Bug Terra type)

Most of Katy’s team can be wiped out with a high level Fire, Flying, or Rock type. Her Urasring is the only one to watch out for, but at this point in the game you should have plenty of strong Pokemon with these types to easily counter her team.

Artazon Gym (on grass)

A tired looking gym manager.

Brassius and his Grass team are back, better but not quite as big as Katy. Here’s what his new outfit looks like:

  • Lilligant – level 65 (grass type)
  • Tsareena — Level 65 (Grass-Type)
  • Breloom: level 65 (grass/fighting type)
  • Treetree — Level 65 (Grass/Normal Type)
  • Sudowoodo — Level 66 (Rock type with Terra Grass type)

All grass types are weak to a variety of other types, including bugs, fire, flying, poison, and ice. While most of them can do this, you should avoid using an ice type at least when facing a Breloom, which counters ice. Otherwise, Vatra is a nice guy and easy to break with most of your team.

Levincia Gym (electric)

It's time to enter the Iono Zone!

Ion’s team is another easy one to plan since, with two exceptions, they are all one-type Pokémon. Here’s his shocking Pokémon team:

  • Kilowatt – Level 65 (Electric/Flying type)
  • Luxray — Level 65 (Electric Type)
  • Bellibolt: level 65 (electric type)
  • Electrode – Level 65 (Electric Type)
  • Mismagius — Level 66 (Ghost-type with Electric Terra-type)

All of Ion’s Pokemon, with the exception of Kilowattrel, will completely stomp a strong ground-type. Since it is a dual Flying-type, have an Ice or Rock-type ready to take down Kilowattrel and it will easily secure victory.

Cascarrafa Gym (water)

Kufu prepares for battle.

Kofu hasn’t learned his lesson and, like Iono, is subject to a strong guy who is almost completely opposed to his entire team. Here is the full list of him:

  • Veluza — Level 65 (Water/Psychic Type)
  • Pelipper — Level 65 (Water/Flying type)
  • Clawitzer — Level 65 (Water Type)
  • Wugwheat — Level 65 (Water type)
  • Crabominable — Level 66 (Fighting/Ice type with Water Terrain type)

This whole squad of water types can’t do anything against a good electric type. Grass is another possibility, though any of its dual-type Pokemon will be a problem there. You can also run a Flying-type if Crabominable is giving you trouble.

Gymnastics Medals (Normal Type)

Larry is holding a pokeball.

Technically, this will be your third battle against good old Larry, as it was revealed that he is also a member of the Elite Four. You wouldn’t know it, this time he’s even stronger. Look at his team:

  • Oinkolonge – Level 65 (Normal Type)
  • Braviary – Level 65 (Normal/Flying Type)
  • Dundunsparce — Level 65 (Normal Type)
  • Komala — Level 65 (Normal Type)
  • Staraptor — Level 66 (Normal/Flies with normal Terra type)

If you remember a trick for Larry from before, it still applies here. Fighting types will counter all your normal types, but will be countered. by all of his Pokémon with Flying moves. Since normal types have no other weaknesses, it just pulls out something strong against flyers, like electric or rock, that can hit hard.

Montenevera Gym (Ghost type)

Poor rap battle.

Ryme’s ghost team doesn’t have to be too scared. This is how he shakes off his team:

  • Mimikyu — Level 65 (Ghost/Fairy type)
  • Banette — Level 65 (Ghost-type)
  • Houndstone — Level 65 (Ghost-type)
  • Spiritomb — Level 65 (Ghosts/Dark Type)
  • Poison: Level 66 (Electric with Ghost Terra type)

Ghost and Dark-types are the two best types to bring here, but keep in mind that Mimikyu’s Fairy moves can counter your Shadow Pokemon. Having your fairy is also a good call to beat the Spiritomb.

Alfornada Gym (psychic type)

Gym Leader Tulip.

Psychic Pokémon are historically difficult, but you need to be well prepared to take down Tulip’s team at this stage of the game:

  • Farigiarf — Level 65 (Normal/Psychic Type)
  • Gallade: Level 65 (Psychic/Fighting Type)
  • Gardevoir — Level 65 Psychic/Fairy Type)
  • Espathra — Level 65 (Psychic Type)
  • Flogres — level 66 (Fairy type with Terra psychic type)

Psychics are weak to Bugs, Darkness, and Spirits, though you have to be careful with their Gallada fighting moves that counter Dark types. While in Fairy form, Flogres will be weak against Poison and Steel.

Glazed Gym (Ice Type)

Grisha introduces himself.

Finally, we return to Team Leda from Grusha.

  • Frostoth — Level 65 (Ice/Bug Type)
  • Beartic – level 65 (ice type)
  • Cetitan — Level 65 (Ice Type)
  • Weavile: level 65 (dark/ice type)
  • Altaria — Level 66 (Dragon-type/Flying with Ice Terra-type)

Ice, as you must know very well, is weak to Fire, Fighting, Rock and Steel types. Of course, Fire is a great option here, especially against Frostoth and Weavile. Give it your all and you’ll break this team of ice.
