Pokémon Violet and Scarlet are the series’ best bird-watching games

Pokemon Violet and Crimson that are currently being talked about in the gaming world, although that talk is mostly about a series of bizarre technical issues. While they are understandably the focus, they shouldn’t completely ignore one of the best aspects of the games: they have a lot of good pigeons.

Yes, Pokémon’s ninth generation feels like it was made specifically for bird watchers. While previous games in the series have typically featured a single star line of flying evolutions and a bunch of winged friends hanging out around the world, Paldea might be Pokémon’s most bird-friendly region yet.

As for the return of the monster, Crimson and violet include some of the best series. The excellent evolutionary lines of Corviknight and Talonflame return, as well as classics like Staraptor, Pelipper, Honchkrow and Braviary. That selection alone gives players a lot of choices if they want a strong flyer in their party.

However, I am most delighted with his new birds, which are a triumph of design in their entirety. This generation’s signature bird is Kilowattrel, which is Pokémon’s spin on a whirlwind. It is notable for its unique flying/electric pairing, which reduces its list of weaknesses to only rock and ice. It’s a combo that was only available on a handful of monsters, mostly reserved for more powerful legends (as well as the legendarily cute Emolga).

It is just one of many great birds on the list this time. Flamigo, who just looks like a regular old flamingo, is a great fighting/flying type that seems like this generation’s version of Cramorant. Espathra is a powerful psychic type who takes her design from Cleopatra. Bombirdier, a personal favorite, is a dark/flying combo that has fun trying to turn a stork into a classic Pokémon. Best of the bunch, though, might be Squawkabilly — which is one of the funniest puns on the show’s name yet. The normal/flying type is a parrot with a pompadour haircut, which makes him look like Elvis. That’s about as adorable as these creatures get.

If you’re someone like me who has always imagined being a bird keeper in the world of Pokémon, our time is now. In Paldea there is bird life, and the sky is wide open.

Pokemon Violet and Crimson are now available on Nintendo Switch.
