Thanks to a chemical reformulation carried out by the researchers, Zytiga, a prescription for prostate cancer, would cause fewer side effects.

It may soon be a “breakthrough” drug for prostate cancer patients. And that will be enough of a change in the formulation of an already prescribed drug, Zytiga, according to an Australian study published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics. Expected result: significant improvement in the patient’s quality of life.

The new version would also reduce side effects, such as joint inflammation and diarrhea, of the abiraterone acetate-based drug. To improve efficacy, a team from the Nanostructures and Drug Application Research Group at the University of Adelaide, Australia, discovered how to make the molecule more absorbable, allowing patients to avoid the two-hour fasting currently required before each injection.

40% increase in efficiency

A team of chemists “succeeded in transforming the drug into an oily solution that was encapsulated in microparticles of porous silica. Two types of formulation were tested in rodents and the second showed a 40% increase in efficacy and a reduction in side effects,” as they explain in Science and the Future.
