Raphael Rowe Family: Father, Mother, Ethnic Background

Raphael Rowe was wrongly convicted of murder and jailed for 12 years. After his release, she joined the Netflix series Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons, exposing the daily challenges of prison life and larger international human rights issues, while making up for those lost years with her family.

So who is your family? As she scrolls down, she finds out details about her father, mother, and ethnicity.

Meet the Raphael Rowe family

Raphael Rowe’s family, his father Raphael, his mother Rosemary and his siblings, were present during the riots. They were with him during court hearings, campaigned abroad leafleting and spreading the word during his time in prison, and welcomed him when he was released.

In part, Raphael’s parents believe that they are to blame for their son’s fate. Unable to afford the things Raphael wanted when he was a child, they forced him to find other ways to get them. So in the process, Raphael was arrested for robbery at the age of 17 and spent 10 months in the Institute for Juvenile Offenders, surrounded by like-minded children.

After being released, Raphael would return to his family only to leave home with a friend to stay in his bed. And this was his nightmare! While he was living in that bed, one night a group of men in balaclavas, guns drawn, broke in, arrested him and charged him with murder and robbery and sent him back to Brixton prison.

In the end, Raphael was found guilty of murder and robbery and sentenced to life in prison. In prison, he later took a journalism course and spent his days poring over case files and taking notes.

Finally, in 1993, Raphael appealed his conviction to the Court of Appeal, and after it was upheld, he appealed to the European Court of Human Rights.

In 1997, the same year that the Criminal Case Review Commission was established, Raphael’s case was referred to the Court of Appeal. 3 years later, the European Court of Human Rights finally delivered its verdict and freed Raphael.

“I’ve never discussed my wife and kids anywhere, at any time. So in my book, that’s the first time I’ve disclosed that I’m married,” Raphae shared.

But sadly, although Raphae has now been reunited with his family, he still has an estranged relationship with his eldest son, who was born in 2000. However, he was able to explain his captivity to his youngest son and daughter.

Before marrying his wife and being in prison, Raphae was in a relationship with the mother of his baby, Nancy Stanley.
