A video of a rat roaming around in the train’s pantry was shared on social media. The disturbing incident has made people question the hygiene standards followed by the authorities while preparing food for passengers. As the video went viral, IRCTC took notice of the incident and responded that after looking into the matter “seriously”, they have taken “appropriate action”.

Instagram user Mangirish Tendulkar posted a video detailing the incident. He was filming a train and then he came across a rat in the pantry.

He initially complained to the RPF and said they responded by saying there were already 300-400 rats roaming the station and that a few entering the train was no surprise. Tendulkar said he got a similar response when he took the matter to Asst. station chief (Commercial). He also claimed that instead of helping him, the ticket office employee tried to delete the video he had taken.

“Don’t we have a right to good and safe food during our journey?” wrote a frustrated Tendulkar. The video he shared shows the rat jumping from one utensil to another and nibbling on food stored in the pantry.

Although initially shared on Instagram, it soon made its way to other social media platforms. IRCTC responded to one such post on X.

“The matter is being considered seriously and appropriate measures have been taken. Pantry staff are sensitized to ensure hygiene and cleanliness in the pantry. The concerned have been duly advised to ensure that effective pest and rodent control measures are implemented,” IRCTC said on Twitter.

People on Xu and Instagram had similar reactions to the now-viral rat video. “Once I saw a worm in my Veg Biryani at Kanyakumari Express. I informed the railway official. He took the biryani and threw it out the window. He said he would give another plate. I took a photo before he threw it away. I posted it on IRCTC Facebook,” X user shared. “The wrong employees should have been fired, why didn’t you do it. You are playing with the health of innocent passengers,” asked another.
