Meet Raven Juarez, Sarah Lawrence Alumnus
Raven Juarez, born in Seattle, Washington, moved to Bronxville, New York in 2009 to attend Sarah Lawrence College. Little did she know at the time that the bubble provided by Sarah Lawrence College would soon cause trouble. In fact, she liked how the quaint town on this campus seemed like her own little magical world of hers; she was even more drawn to it when she met a group of close friends.
So, before the start of their sophomore year, the eight of them, including this liberal arts major and Talia Ray, made the decision to live together in the Slonim Woods 9 rowhouse on campus. The year that Talia’s father, Larry Ray, was released from prison and immediately allowed to live in a children’s home until he recovered, however, everything changed.
Raven admitted on the docu-series, “We all agreed to be accommodating,” though she privately observed that the father-daughter team mostly just shouted their praise. She wasn’t really impressed with her supposed abilities or experiences, but she couldn’t deny how she constantly reached out to almost everyone who lived there.
The fact that Larry arranged for Raven’s relationship with Dan Levin to break down is a key factor in this; she knew before that he was close to Isabelle Pollok and Santos Rosario, but this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. She admits that during the last conversation with her ex-boyfriend, she became a bit sarcastic.
As a result, relations continued to deteriorate, and the group split almost permanently down the middle. There were people who supported Larry and others who didn’t; Raven was firmly in the last group, along with three others, all working to uncover the full truth.
However, Raven’s devotion to them (or the people who once were) never wavered. Raven hated the fact that her friend group had become so divided that she couldn’t even look each other in the eye on campus. That’s why she persistently spoke out against Larry for years, on and off campus, even going so far as to express concern that he might be running a real cult. He bullied her friends to the point where they couldn’t tell truth from lies, even though she could never dream of being right in more ways than one.
Where is Cuervo Juárez today?
Raven Juarez is a preschool teacher at Roaring Mouse Creative Arts Studio, LLC. She was a teacher at the University School of Child Development (UCDS) from 2016 to 2019.
“Just as children babble before they learn to speak, so they scribble before they develop their own pictorial language,” a current preschool teacher at Roaring Mouse Creative Arts Studio once said. “Art is a language that can be used for something deeper and more important than something that looks pretty on the wall.”
Raven added, “I think art is a great way to promote social justice and teach kids to appreciate cultures and communities that are different from the ones they grew up in… Art is a place where kids can turn their memories, their dreams, their ideas and their hopes in a very symbolic, almost poetic composition. They know exactly what that means, and if you’re lucky enough to have them explain it to you, it can be really moving.”
