“France has been assured the availability of sufficient doses” of the antiviral remdesivir, the first drug to show relative effectiveness in treating Covid-19, the Medicines Agency (MSNA) says, while the United States has bought almost all production for the next few months.
The US government announced a week ago that it had taken over 92% of Gilead’s total production of remdesivir from July to September, roughly 500,000 treatments out of nearly 550,000.

“To ensure access to the drug remdesivir on the national territory, France has been ensured the availability of sufficient doses for the Gilead laboratory,” MAN said. “Patients with Covid-19 will continue to benefit from this treatment,” she added.
On July 3, this antiviral drug received conditional marketing authorization in the European Union, less than a month after the application was submitted. This procedure allows drugs that address an unmet medical need to be placed on the market with less complete data than expected, if the estimated benefit outweighs the known risks.
$390 a bottle
It was already approved in the United States on May 1, after clinical trials showed that it reduced the recovery time of patients with severe Covid-19 to four days. Until now, remdesivir has been available in France as part of clinical trials or through compassionate use in patients who cannot be included in the trials.
