Northwestern University took to YouTube to share a video showing a ‘walking’ robot created by a group of engineers using artificial intelligence. They also added that it was created from scratch and that it only took a few seconds to make. Researchers conducted this interesting experiment while testing a newly built AI algorithm. Not only that, they claimed that the AI designed the robot with just a simple query.

“Northwestern engineers unveil ‘instant-evolution’ algorithm, first AI program capable of designing new robots that work in the real world,” the university added in a YouTube video sharing.
In a separate blog, they shared a quote from the head of the experimental team, Sam Kriegman. “We told the artificial intelligence that we wanted a robot that could walk on land. Then we simply pressed a button and done! He generated a blueprint for a robot in the blink of an eye that looks nothing like any animal that has ever walked the earth. I call this process ‘instant evolution,’” said Kriegman.
What query did they use?
The researchers used a simple query to test this new artificial intelligence. They asked the AI to “design a robot that can walk on a flat surface.” “A new algorithm compressed evolution to lightning speed” to arrive at a successful design.
The video shared by the university begins to show an expert explaining what they do. As the clip progresses, the robot is made using a 3D printer. Towards the end, a few ‘clumsy steps’ are needed.
The study of the experiment was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It explains in detail the procedure of the process and the purpose of the experiment.

“When people look at this robot, they might see it as a useless gadget. I see the birth of a whole new organism,” Kriegman said. “Now everyone can watch evolution in action as AI creates better and better robot bodies in real-time,” he added.
“Robot development used to require weeks of trial and error on a supercomputer, and of course, before any animal could run, swim or fly around our world, there were billions and billions of years of trial and error. This is because evolution has no predictions. He cannot see into the future to know whether a particular mutation will be beneficial or disastrous. We have found a way to remove this blindfold, thus condensing billions of years of evolution into a moment,” he said.
