Whether it’s an existing network connection being dropped, displaying or hearing a “not connected” message, or having trouble initially connecting to the network, Internet problems are never fun, especially when your smart home technology relies on of it. If your Roomba is throwing up a red flag when it comes to connecting to Wi-Fi, here are a few things you can try.

Why won’t my Roomba connect to Wi-Fi?

When you first start your Roomba, you’ll be prompted (via the companion app) to pair the new robot vacuum with a compatible Wi-Fi network. While this process shouldn’t take any time as the bot will usually connect to the Wi-Fi network your phone is connected to, there are times when the process might not be as smooth.

Here are some common problems you may encounter and what you can do to avoid them.

Step 1 – First things first: Make sure your Wi-Fi network is working properly.

Sometimes we take this troubleshooting step for granted because we’re used to having all of our internet-connected equipment working. In some cases, even if your Wi-Fi actually works, it may not work at peak performance, making it difficult to connect and register new devices.

If you notice that your network is a little slower than usual, or that you can’t connect your new robot vacuum to the network, a simple solution is to restart your router. We recommend turning off the router, waiting about 15 seconds, and turning it back on.

Once the network is restored, try connecting Roomba again.

Step 2 – You need to make sure that your Roomba is connected to the correct wireless network band.

These days, most wireless routers (even those from your cable company) will transmit on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. Traditionally, 2.4 GHz is better for operating equipment further from the base of your router, while 5 GHz is recommended for connecting equipment closer to your router.

Although we recommend that robot vacuums remain connected to the 2.4 GHz band, many Roomba models have the ability to pair with the 5 GHz network.

Step 4 – If all else fails, sometimes a factory reset is necessary to get your Roomba back to working order. This process essentially wipes your vacuum’s internal memory and will likely require you to put it back into the app as new.

How do I reconnect Roomba to Wi-Fi?

In case your Roomba doesn’t pair with your network or you’re setting up the vacuum for the first time, connecting the bot is a quick and easy process.

Step 1 – Make sure your mobile device is connected to any network (2.4GHz or 5GHz) that your Roomba supports. You also need to make sure that you have enabled Bluetooth on your device.

Step 2 – Make sure Roomba is in its charging stand. Then launch the iRobot Companion App from your mobile device.

Step 3 – If this is your first time adding Roomba to your Wi-Fi network, select add a bot. Then choose a name for your vacuum and press Continue.

Step 4: Enter the password for your Wi-Fi network and touch Continue. From here, your Roomba should automatically pair with your network.

Step 5 – If you experienced network outages or some sort of intermittent Wi-Fi issue, or simply want to change the network your Roomba lives on, launch the iRobot app and head over to Network settings.

Find the network you want the vacuum to connect to, enter the password, and wait for your Roomba to connect.
