Ten years ago, Wizkid did something that many Nigerian Afrobeat artists struggled to do for many years: break through and find an international audience.
That’s not to say we haven’t been successful before him: 2Baba, D Banj, Wande Coal, P Square and Eedris Abdulkareem helped pave the way for that moment. But Wizkid has helped put Nigeria on the map in countless new and bigger ways, from signing with Sony Music to collaborating with top rappers and R&B stars.
Over the years Wizkid has raised the profile of local artists such as Fire Boy, Olamide, Tems, Tiwa Savage, Omalay and Rema.
Outside of Wizkid’s Lagos, there’s a whole country of artists expanding the look and sound of Afrobeat, reshaping the subtle rhythm pioneered by Fela Kuti, the band’s leader and Nigerian instrumentalist. Musicians are now using the foundations of Afrobeat to create exciting new sounds that reflect the diverse voices that have made the populous African nation of Nigeria a multicultural hotspot.
Below we’ve found a new voice in Afrobeat, from the southern parts of Nigeria, although we know there’s a lot more talent out there across the country – this young man you need to know now. We’ve included some of his songs as an introduction to new listeners, as well as some of his and Instagram photos of him.

More About Him: Adewale Atanda (born 11 September 1999), known professionally as Rybeena, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter.
Adewale Atanda was born and raised in Lagos State but has family roots in Abeokuta, Ogun State. In 2019, he graduated with a National Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Ibadan. Rybeena decided to pursue a music career after his ND show and started posting freestyles and covers on IG. He did a special version of ‘time no dey’ by Tobisneh ft zinoleesky and Mohbad which caught the eye of a record company executive and the talented young artist and songwriter was signed to Tobisneh’s Records.
Rybeena’s first official single was Nobody ft Harteez, after which she released a song that gave her more recognition in the music industry “Ayomide” ft Diamond Jimma. This song has over 2 million streams across all platforms and counting, Rybeena is serving juice to everyone right now. with her EP (extended playlist) that she leans into afro juice.
