Saku Chandrasekara didn’t have access to an oven and baking until she moved to the UK at 18. So, she never thought in a million years that she would be selected to go to Bake Off tent. It was just a “little dream” at the time she submitted the request and she wasn’t sure if it would come true. But she had a phone call and felt like she was going to explode, with happiness of course!

When Sak Chandrasekar was finally allowed to speak about his involvement in the Great British Bake Off 2023, announced on her social networks and wrote “SURPRISE…🤩! I am beyond excited to tell you all that I will be coming to your living rooms AT THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF 2023 with my lovely Bake Off family🍰👩🍳.”
Then, when they started filming the show, Šaku revealed her story. She said her family home in Sri Lanka didn’t have an oven, so she only turned to baking when she moved to the UK with her husband in 2003. Later, when she became a mom, she prepared treats for children’s lunch boxes by replicating the snacks she saw in the supermarket. And just like that, the self-taught person became a baker.
Saku also shared stories related to the traditional flavors of her heritage in front of the cameras. The fan favorite spoke highly of the curry spices. She claimed they made the best pie fillings and discussed how generous additions of cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg found their way into her sweeter cakes. Saka also told the viewers about her domestic vegetable garden.
For Saku, the winner of the “Week of Technical Challenges”, the best memory of GBBO it’s about meeting fellow bakers, who come from all ages with a shared passion for baking, the big white tent, getting to know the team, their love, support and encouraging words. She said that all this will never leave her memory.
Thus, Saku managed to win the hearts of viewers across the UK with her “joyful” personality. So much so that some even joked that they would “die for her”, and many supported her to win the trophy. After the baker wowed the judges with her biscuits last night, viewers expressed their support on Twitter. Some have described Saka as “the human version of joy and sunshine”.
In Week 2’s episode, the bakers tackled biscuits in a signature, technical and showstopper challenge, and when it was Saka’s turn, she created Sicilian-inspired sandwich biscuits and managed to impress the judges. They thought her biscuits were “very pretty”.
After week 3, Saku was still in the competition. So far she’s been lucky unlike Amos, who became the first baker of the season to leave, and fellow baker Keith, the second to succeed.
During her time on the show, Saku also became close to many, including Nick with whom she promoted the cookbook “The Great British Bake Off: Kitchen Classics”.
