Design, screen and durability

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra practical notch with a holeJohn Velasco / Digital trends

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 Ultra are large phones with a very similar design. The most visible difference is that the S20 Ultra is larger in every dimension and significantly heavier. The glass back is curved on both, but the top-left camera module looks different on the Ultra — it’s wider and says “Space Zoom 100X”. The S20 Ultra has a slightly larger 6.9-inch AMOLED screen while the S20 Plus has a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen.

Both screens are top quality; they are HDR10+ certified and boast a 120Hz refresh rate that gives a silky smooth feel and will especially delight gamers. Since the S20 Plus screen is slightly smaller, it’s a tad sharper, but the difference is so small that it won’t be noticeable. Both phones are IP68 rated, meaning they can be submerged in fresh water up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes without damage. There’s not much here to separate them, some people will prefer the extra screen on the S20 Ultra, but others may find the S20 Plus easier to handle.

Performance, battery life and charging

You’ll find a very capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor in the S20 Plus and S20 Ultra, although in some markets it will be replaced by Samsung’s Exynos 990 chipset. It comes standard with an ample 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage with room for expansion with a MicroSD card. While both phones are offered in 512GB storage variants, only the S20 Ultra has extra RAM — the more expensive model has 16GB. Performance with any phone will be lightning fast and smooth. These phones are ready for the most demanding applications and games. They can also store many different games and apps in RAM, meaning you can jump off to do something else and then pick back up right where you left off.

The larger S20 Ultra has an extra 500mAh of battery capacity and this will likely give it longer life between charges than the S20 Plus, even though it has a larger power screen. Both phones come with a 25W charger in the box, but the S20 Ultra can also support 45W wired charging if you purchase a compatible fast charger separately. Both support Samsung’s Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 which offers up to 15W with the right charging pad. They can also wirelessly charge other devices in an instant thanks to Samsung’s Wireless PowerShare feature.

Cameras

Taking photos with the Samsung Galaxy S20 UltraJohn Velasco / Digital trends

This category hands down the biggest win for the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra because, while both have impressive and versatile camera packages, the Ultra is clearly superior. The S20 Ultra has a 108-megapixel main lens, a 48-megapixel telephoto lens and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens in the main rear camera. The S20 Plus makes do with a 12-megapixel main lens, a 64-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens.

The main difference here in terms of capabilities is that the Ultra camera has 10x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom, compared to 3x and 30x respectively for the S20 Plus. Whether you need that extra zoom capability is highly debatable. However, selfie lovers will definitely benefit from the Ultra’s 40-megapixel front-facing camera, which should offer more detail compared to the S20 Plus’ 10-megapixel front-facing camera. Both phones can record video in up to 8K quality.

Samsung also promises smarter AI to help you take the best photos in any situation, and larger sensors than previous Samsung phones allow these cameras to capture more light for better performance at night and indoors when lighting is limited.

Software and updates

Both the S20 Plus and S20 Ultra run Android 11 with Samsung’s One UI 3 on top, which is simpler and cleaner than previous versions, and, importantly for phones this size, easier to use with one hand. The software update schedule for these phones is likely to be pretty much the same, so there’s no clear advantage for either here.

Special features

Although it does not differentiate these mobile phones, it is important to note that both support 5G connectivity. The smaller Samsung S20 only supports sub-6 5G networks; however, both the S20 Plus and S20 Ultra can support sub-6 and mmWave mechanics.

Price and availability

The starting price for the S20 Plus is $1,200, while the S20 Ultra costs $1,400. Neither model is sold directly by Samsung, having been usurped by the S21. However, you can still find them on sale through Amazon, Best Buy, and other major online retailers. If you’re lucky, you should also be able to find them at a discount from their original prices.

Overall winner: Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

When it comes to the winners, the S20 Ultra is our overall favorite. In this article, we talked about the many differences in camera quality, the larger screen of the S20 Ultra, the larger and longer-lasting battery, and the ability to charge faster via a wire. We love these features, but since the S20 Ultra has a larger size for these upgrades, the device itself might feel too bulky for casual users. With its smaller size and lower price, the S20 Plus has some admirable features, but if you’re looking for ultimate power and top-notch performance, we suggest you go for the Ultra.
