Design, screen and durability

  • 3. Galaxy Z Flip 3 closed.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G and Z Flip 3 are attractive foldable devices with similar clamshell and horizontal fold designs. The Z Flip 3 still boasts a more seamless design and beats the Z Flip 5G in terms of durability with a body made of Armor Aluminum, the strongest aluminum used in a Galaxy phone to date, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for drops and scratches. protection. The Z Flip 3 also boasts a new protective stretch PET film and optimized layers of the main display panel – in fact, Samsung claims the display is 80% more durable than previous foldable displays. The smooth glass back of the Z Flip 3 is quite slippery, so you’ll want to invest in a protective case if this is your phone.

Let’s talk about that hidden hinge. It’s almost the same on both phones and holds the device in place at any angle, although the hinge on the Z Flip 3 is sleeker and slimmer. Speaking of hinges, the Z Flip 3 also features improved Sweeper technology, with shorter bristles that keep dust and other particles out of the hinge — and Samsung claims the improved hinge can withstand up to 200,000 folds. Its smooth movement is almost silent, and while it feels stiff at first, it loosens up with use, although opening the Z Flip 3 will always be a two-handed operation as the hinge is designed to hold the phone open at an angle of your choosing.

But the Z Flip 3’s main screen takes center stage. While both phones have a 6.7-inch full HD+ main display, the Z Flip 3 boasts a 1.9-inch cover display with a resolution of 512 x 260, making it easier to view messages and notifications without opening the phone, compared to a 1.1-inch cover the Z Flip 5G screen with a resolution of 300 x 112. The downside is that the Z Flip 3 Cover Screen doesn’t have the option to show notification icons, so if you miss them, you’ll have to wake up the phone and swipe right. The cover display on the Z Flip 3 also suffers from being occasionally unresponsive. You’ll have to press the power button to wake it up, and it often takes a bit longer to respond to a swipe than it should. The camera also cannot be activated from the Cover Screen.

The new Z Flip 3 also hits that adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, which is great if you’re a multitasker or playing the latest games on your phone — and Samsung Pay is built into the bezel, so you can quickly pay for your morning coffee on the go. Both phones weigh 183 grams, but while the Z Flip 5G doesn’t have any water resistance, the Z Flip 3 has an IPX8 rating, which ensures safe submersion in water up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes.

All things considered, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 takes the prize here for its larger clamshell screen, more durable body, IPX8 rating, improved hidden hinge, and wider color options.

Performance, battery life and charging

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is powered by an impressive Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, the same chip found in the Galaxy S21 and OnePlus 9 series phones — and you’ll get the same processor no matter where you are in the world, because there’s no Exynos-powered model this time. With 8GB of RAM, it should handle multitasking and all the latest apps with ease — and don’t forget the 120Hz refresh rate, which is adaptive to save battery life. Performance is excellent and this is also a great phone for gaming, but it does get quite warm to the touch, especially around the rear camera module.

In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 865 Plus (an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 865 chip), which is used in phones like the ASUS ROG Phone 3 and the Galaxy Note 20 line. Again, you get 8GB of RAM, so any the difference in multitasking or gaming performance shouldn’t be that obvious — although benchmark scores are higher for the Snapdragon 888, and reports suggest performance is three times better than the 865 Plus. The Z Flip 5G comes with 256GB of storage, while the Z Flip 3 gives you a choice of 128GB or 256GB, though neither phone has a microSD card slot for storage expansion — so whichever storage you decide on is all you’ll ever have.

Battery life is also similar on both phones. Both have a 3300mAh battery and offer 15W fast charging, with the Z Flip 5G offering 9W wireless charging compared to the 10W wireless charging offered with the Z Flip 3. If you pick up the Z Flip 3, you might find that battery life is disappointing, especially considering the 120Hz refresh rate, as the phone struggles to last a full day of normal use when using a 4G/5G connection. When it comes to charging, both the Z Flip 5G and Z Flip 3 boast reverse wireless charging (Wireless PowerShare) that lets you charge the Galaxy Buds 2 or other accessories on the back of your phone — pretty handy when you’re traveling without access to a charger.

This round is tight. With both phones boasting the same RAM, storage and battery, the Z Flip 3 ultimately takes the top spot, thanks to its more powerful Snapdragon 888 processor and 120Hz refresh rate.

Cameras

There’s not much to write home about when it comes to comparing the camera hardware on these two phones — it remains the same on both foldable phones. The IZ Flip 5G and Z Flip 3 both have dual camera offerings on the outside: a 12-megapixel main wide sensor with f/1.8 aperture and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.4 aperture. Both also have a 10MP selfie camera with f/2.4 aperture.

In addition to the above, the Z Flip 3 also supports video recording up to 4K resolution at 60fps, while on the Z Flip 5G it is 30fps. Both phones’ cameras are good enough for everyday use, but prone to over-processing.

The Z Flip 3 does boast some camera improvements, however, with Flex Mode making it easier to take hands-free selfies. With Z Flip 3, you can even take quick photos — and videos — from the home screen using the improved Quick Shot by simply double-clicking Power key. But you don’t even need to touch a button to take a photo, as Samsung’s gesture control system lets you show your open hand to the camera to capture the perfect shot. When using the rear camera, you can also set the Cover Screen to show a preview.

Despite identical hardware, the Z Flip 3 just edged out its rival in this spot thanks to its 60fps video recording.

Software and updates

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the latest, shipping with Android 11 and Samsung’s One UI 3.1. Pick up the Z Flip 5G and you’ll immediately get Android 10 with Samsung’s One UI 3.0, upgradable to Android 11. If you’ve had a Galaxy phone before, you’ll feel right at home, with Samsung generally promising three generations of OS updates and four years security updates.

The Z Flip 3 wins here on the longevity front, especially if the future of your phone is a priority.

Special features

Flip 3 and Buds 2.Ajay Kumar/Digital Trends

Both phones have 5G, making them a great choice for the future, but the Z Flip 5G doesn’t work with Verizon’s mmWave network and only supports Sub-6 5G on AT&T and T-Mobile. In contrast, the Z Flip 3 supports both Sub-6 and mmWave standards.

You’ll also find that both devices feature Flex Mode, which allows users to customize how they view and control content — for example, you can watch a YouTube video on top of the screen while reading comments on the bottom half of the screen, and easily switch which half of the screen handles a certain task. But the Z Flip 3 goes a step further with a new Flex Mode Panel feature designed to make apps look better — as well as improve their usability. When the Z Flip 3 is partially folded, the Flex Mode Panel makes viewing more convenient — for example, it moves your Netflix or YouTube video to the top half of the screen while keeping brightness and volume controls on the bottom half. It sounds like a small thing, but in practice it’s a pretty useful new feature.

Samsung also introduced a new Labs feature for the Z Flip 3, which lets you optimize even more apps onto the foldable screen than ever before. We love that Samsung Pay is also built into the Z Flip 3’s cover, so you can quickly pay for coffee or groceries on the go without opening your phone.

The Z Flip 3 takes the prize here, although this was very close. Ultimately, though, its mmWave 5G support and new features only push it forward.

Overall winner

All in all, it’s very close, with the Z Flip 3 leading the way thanks to its larger bezel display, IPX8 water resistance, mmWave 5G support, and improved, sleeker hinge — not to mention its more powerful Snapdragon 888 processor and adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. Since both phones have the same battery, screen size, RAM and storage, the differences between the Z Flip 3 and Z Flip 5G may mean that choosing which one is right for you probably comes down to personal preference.
