On February 4, the pharmaceutical group was charged with “serious fraud” and “intentional damage.”

The Sanofi group is being investigated for “involuntary manslaughter” in an investigation into the marketing of the antiepileptic drug Depakine opened in 2016, which confirms information from the newspaper Le Monde, the company announced Monday. Last February, the pharmaceutical company was already accused of “aggravated tort of fraud” and “intentional damage.”

The investigation, opened in September 2016, aimed to determine whether there was deception “about the risks associated with the use of the product and the precautions that must be taken so that its use is dangerous to human health”, and covered the period of 1990 to April 2015.

The group contested the accusation.

The molecule in question, sodium valproate, has been marketed since 1967 under the Sanofi brand Depakine, but also under generic brands, and is prescribed to people with bipolar disorder. It poses a high risk of birth defects to the fetus if taken by a pregnant woman. The number of children disabled by sodium valproate, the molecule found in Depakine and used against epilepsy and bipolar disorder, is estimated to be between 15 and 30,000, according to studies.
