Seth Berger was virtually unknown to the world until Netflix’s Untold: The Rise and Fall of AND1 premiered in August 2022. This documentary about the influential streetstyle-inspired basketball brand brought back memories of when AND1 sneakers and streetball were fashionable in the 90s. them. And Seth seems to have been the man behind it.
Seth was passionate about basketball from a very young age. He even went so far as to play junior college basketball for a year and then college football at the University of Pennsylvania. However, he chose politics after earning a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1989 and worked on Capitol Hill for two years before enrolling in an MBA at Wharton.
But that didn’t mean he stopped playing basketball. “I probably spent four to eight hours waiting for every hour I spent studying,” she recalled. Waking up each day thinking about basketball, Seth began to think of ways that he could build his own basketball business.
So, in 1993, the same year he graduated, Seth, his childhood friend (Stanford grad) Jay Gilbert, and fellow Wharton Hooper Tom Austin started AND1 by swapping trash-talking clothes. Eventually, the brand dabbled in sneakers and streetball, and before they knew it, the AND1 was the next big thing.

The former CEO of AND1 must have gotten rich off the company. But his career didn’t end when he sold everything in 2005 due to lack of income before it was too late. In fact, the same year that he parted ways with AND1, Seth took over as CEO of another startup, Lightning Poker. There, he helped the company raise $1 million in funding, set up an automated poker table, and negotiated an international distribution deal with Shufflemaster, all in one year!
In 2007 Seth joined Westtown School as the head basketball coach and continued to do so for over 15 years. His teams reportedly have a winning percentage of 73 percent and have won the league title nine times and the national championship in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2022.
In between his training, from 2011 to 2012, Seth also funded a small company in the mobile gaming space, GravyTrain. Unfortunately, while the idea was well executed, the market for these games began to crash and Seth went out of business.
Additionally, in 2016, he joined the Sixers Innovation Lab Crafted by Kimball as its director.
Seth Berger’s Wife
Seth Berger married his wife Christelle (née Williams) Berger on September 15, 1996. The two met while attending the University of Pennsylvania. At the time, Seth was still with AND1 while Christelle was an athletic star.
Fast forward more than 25 years later, the duo were happier than ever. “25 years later, Infiniti still isn’t. Wife, best friend, best teammate in the world, my queen of spades. God blessed me with you and I will be forever grateful. Happy Anniversary CW, love you to the moon and back,” Seth posted on his IG on his 25th anniversary.
But that wasn’t the only time Seth praised his wife. From holidays to her birthdays, Christelle often graced his wife’s gatherings.
Christelle turned 55 on February 17, 2022. She then worked as an athletic trainer.
