Shanika Malcolm is an Afro-Indigenous woman who once ended the Naked & Afraid franchise. She grew up in Philadelphia, where nature was always her refuge. “I always find state parks, places to hike or bathe in the river, all the time, even in the US when I travel. I like travel. So when I’m driving, I always look for nature pages and find one with nature,” she explained.
So after years of researching nature, he found out in 2017 that there are “Land Skill Gatherings” in South Carolina and North Carolina. Of course, she decided to participate in one of them for the weekly event called “Krejesnica”. There she had the most beautiful experience of her life and it was a kind of initiation to the earth / primitive arts.
Year after year, Shanika would return to the event to relax and further connect with the community. Then in 2020, while living in Atlanta, she took a willow basket-making class taught by Luke Mclaughlin (three-time Naked & Afraid competitor) and signed up for a year.
Shockingly, in January 2021, she received a Facebook message that read, “Hi, I’m a talent scout for Naked & Afraid. We saw you on the internet, do you want to audition? But at that time, she Shanika did not think of joining the show and she accepted the audition just because she is a person who will try anything once.
Then the (virtual) audition began, and after passing it, he had to do a psychological check with a psychologist, and then a media check.
Well, looking back now, the whole experience from auditioning to the end of filming was wonderful and exhausting at the same time. “We had machetes, a lighter and a mosquito net, we had to find food and water, and actually live, that’s all! It sounds very simple, you know food, shelter, water, but that’s the hardest part,” she explained.

Shanika Malcolm is the founder of the Starseed Landing collective ecovillage. Her organization claimed to take action by “being the change we want to see in the world,” rather than pushing a particular philosophy. Her vision included an intentional community of regenerative ecovillage, a healing center, an educational center, cooperative living, local and global transformation, personal and collective spiritual growth and expansion, and an ecolodge.

Before starting Starseed, Shanika worked on Awakening the Illuminated Heart for a while. She also owned and operated the Eternal Wellness Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a mission to eradicate disease by educating, empowering, and bettering humanity through full-spectrum healing (nature and a holistic approach).
