Star Ocean: Another Story by R is a remake of 1998’s second entry in the Star Ocean role-playing universe, but despite numerous improvements, the core design of the original game remains almost entirely intact. This includes its offering of dual protagonists, one of which you’ll have to choose as your main character at the start of gameplay. Should you choose Claude or Rena first?
Regardless of whether you choose Claude or Rena for your gameplay Star Ocean: Another Story by R, the main narrative of the game will remain the same from start to finish. However, these two characters will witness many important events from their own perspective, giving you a little extra insight into how they feel about what’s going on. Additionally, each will have access to one exclusive recruitable character. This means you’ll have to play the game twice if you want to see the full story of the two recruitable characters and see what they bring to the table in combat.

Here are three key things to keep in mind when choosing a character for your first playthrough:
- Claude offers a more complete take on the narrative and will fill in more gaps in the main story, while Rena provides a bit more knowledge of the planet and local happenings.
- Claude is significantly more powerful in combat, with a focus on aggressive hand-to-hand combat, while Rena is mostly focused on healing and other magic.
- Rena’s exclusive recruitable character is arguably better than that of Claude’s gameplay and is generally considered the strongest character in the game.
With all of this in mind, our opinion is that Claude is the best character to start playing with due to his clearer view of the story and overall combat abilities that make the first half of the game a bit easier. However, if you’re partial to the idea of getting the strongest character in the game, or have already witnessed Claude play, Rena is also a perfectly viable choice. In any case, the game has more than 80 endings, so there is enough incentive to play through the game multiple times with both characters.
