Honkai: Star Railway just released update 1.2, which means new content and characters. We will look at the next chapter of Xianzhou Luofu’s plot and catch up with Stellaron Hunters Blade and Kafka, the new five-star characters for a limited time. They are part of a mysterious organization that follows the will of someone named Elio, who can supposedly predict the future and even manipulate it. As the “five star” title suggests, Blade and Kafka are some of the strongest teammates you can have. They play a major role in the latest series of stories and have a number of moves to support their roles as recurring anti-villains. Unfortunately, even the most diligent savers would be hard-pressed to secure a currency that would help them. You might even want to save your Star Jade for Fu Xuan or Lunae Imbibitor.
You get eight free characters just by playing star railway, so you shouldn’t spend money on time-limited event banners. Still, many of these characters significantly strengthen teams enough to make it easier to clear up difficult content and experiment with different playstyles.
So should you bet on Kafka or Blade? Here are some things to consider when choosing between the two.

Again, Blade and Kafka are limited time characters. Both will only be available during Honkai: Star Railway 1.2 for the dates and times established until HoYoverse decides to show its banners again in the future. Why you should bet on Blade
- Want to level up a Destruction or Wind character
- You want to experiment with a character that sacrifices HP for buffs
- You like handsome boys with a tragic past
Blade can be used as a primary or secondary damage dealer. In general, it will be more useful for players who don’t already have a strong wind unit. Dan Heng can fill many of the same needs due to his experience with single-target wind damage, even if he and Blade’s movesets are quite different. If you already have a fully built Dan Heng, you might want to reconsider getting the Blade.
Most of Blade’s abilities scale based on his max HP, but they also consume his health. Using his ability increases his attacks in exchange for HP, and the Ultimate restores his HP when dealing damage to enemies. Upgrading his attacks doesn’t use skill points, so he’s basically begging you to use it. In most cases, you’ll need a healer to make sure Blade doesn’t break the bucket before he can unleash the full power of it.
Why you should follow Kafka
- Want to level up a Nihility or Lightning character
- You want to experiment with a damage over time (DoT) style of play.
- You love her mommy-dommy vibes
Kafka is a Nihility character, which means he specializes in applying debuffs to enemies and dealing damage over time. His Ultimate, Talent, and Technique deal shock damage to enemies. Shock, just one of the status effects on the Honkai: Star Railway, reduces the enemy’s health more than the small purple lightning icon initially indicates. His ability does even more damage to enemies that already have a DoT debuff. Her talent unleashes a follow-up attack that deals concussion and heavy damage based on her attack stat, also making her an advantage for dealing damage outside of her own move.
That being said, Kafka is not a powerful force in and of himself. She needs teammates to deal the most damage or maybe apply even more debuffs to power up her. Unlike Silver Wolf, she doesn’t apply debuffs with the intention of waiting for the main DPS to remove them. She is more like a Serval, she uses her Lightning to drain the health of multiple targets to take them out faster.
Who is better: Blade or Kafka?
If we talk about raw damage and survivability, Blade is better than Kafka. He can single-handedly kill entire waves of enemies with his ability to buff and heal. It can be hard to keep him alive without a healer in higher level battles, but he hits a lot of different bases that Kafka can’t. He adapts to a specific style of play. Blade is simpler: just tuck him in and let him fight.
