It was only a matter of time before the COVID-19 pandemic turned into horror movie material. It makes sense given the heightened panic of an invisible enemy and the need to isolate oneself from danger that gripped many people during the crisis, two cornerstones of the genre.
sicka new horror film that he co-wrote Shout mastermind Kevin Williamson deftly uses the pandemic as both a setting and a major plot device. What is Sick about?
Sick opens with a homage to Williamson’s earlier work, the 1996 classic Shout. A young man in his 20s, Tyler Murphy, shops at the store in early April 2020, just as the pandemic was in full swing. While shopping, Tyler receives strange text messages indicating that someone is watching him. He quickly goes home, where he is met by a masked killer with a knife. After a vicious battle in which Tyler’s hand is severed, he seemingly scares off the killer. As he cautiously leaves his apartment to confirm the assassin’s exit, the assassin slits his throat from behind.
The film then cuts to the next day on an empty college campus, where two students, Parker and Miri, quarantine their car at Parker’s secluded family cabin in the woods. They arrive safely, unpack and sanitize everything to make sure they are COVID free. While relaxing near the lake, Parker and Miri talk about an Instagram video of her dating a random guy, Benji, at a party. Miri thinks she did it to make her DJ’s boyfriend jealous of her, which Parker denies.

Their discussion is interrupted by an anonymous text message sent to Parker which, like Tyler’s messages, indicates that someone is watching them. Parker, alarmed but not terrified, blocks the number. Later that night, the girls’ quiet evening is interrupted by the doorbell ringing. After a tense minute, it is revealed to be DJ, Parker’s boyfriend. He is there to express his true feelings for Parker, which Parker quickly but quietly rejects.
As the girls retire upstairs to sleep, a masked figure (the same one from the opening scene) sneaks into the house while DJ retrieves his bags. Once inside, the masked man managed to steal DJ and Parker’s iPhones. A song from the basement wakes up DJ, who immediately realizes that someone is in the house and is about to kill Miri. He gives Parker his keys and tells her to jump out the second story window until he gets Miri. DJ saves Miri, who quickly runs off, leading to a fight between DJ and the killer.
Sick’s first surprising twist
Outside, the two girls watch DJ stagger out of the house, only for the killer to impale him on a hanger. Two girls try to escape in a car, but the flat tire gets stuck in a ditch. Parker and Miri run back to the house, where they try to escape from another story. Miri falls, apparently dead. Parker goes downstairs and fights the assassin, whom Parker kills with a blunt object. To Parker’s surprise, further the masked killer then enters the house, briefly weeps over the dead body, and chases it to the lake. Yeah, now there are two killers, just like Shout!
After swimming across a lake and accidentally killing a neighbor (his throat was slit), Parker hits the road and incapacitates the other killer just as a car approaches. She asks an old woman (who wears a medical mask) for help. She lets Parker get in the car, but he doesn’t budge. She quickly realizes that she smells like chloroform and passes out.

Parker reawakens in a cabin, where she is being held captive by a woman and another masked assassin, who is revealed to be an older man. It is revealed that they are the parents of the first masked killer and Benji, the boy Parker kissed at the party on her Instagram. Parker appears to have passed the COVID on to Benji, who soon dies from it. Parental contact found the person who gave Parker the COVID, Tyler, and killed him at the opening scene. Now they want to kill Parker because he killed his two sons.
Benji’s father notices that someone is using the Wi-Fi in the house and correctly deduces that it is Miri, who is still alive, who contacted the police via a computer. As the man searches for her, Benji’s mother prepares to kill Parker before Miri sneaks up behind her and pushes her out the window. They both run upstairs and set a trap for the older man, whose Achilles heel is cut by Miri and Parker blinds him with hairspray, causing him to fall from the second story onto a pair of beams in the hallway.
Both girls go to the outside garage to start the other car. As Parker gets gas to power the car, Benji’s injured but still alive mother attacks him. In the fight, the mother spilled gasoline. Miri sets her mother’s pants on fire, which quickly engulfs her entire body. She runs towards the road, but collapses. As her body burns, the two girls hit the road when the police finally arrive.
