Speaking to Ipsos before the shutdown, 91% of French people (excluding Corsica) exceed – albeit rarely – speed limits (-1 point compared to 2019), 72% did not observe safety distances (-4 ), 57% forgot to blink or double change direction (-4) or even 27% (-1) to send an email or text while driving.

Three indicators on the rise

Of the fourteen indicators that report dangerous driving behavior, only three are worse, including seat belt failure (10%, +2) and traffic on the highway bank (4%, +1).

“There is always a very large number of behaviors that are really dangerous and too much to hope for a real gain in terms of safety,” Bernadette Moreau, chief envoy of the Vinci Autoroutes foundation, told AFP.

The French and Greeks swear the most

The Greeks keep most of the cars in front of them (47%) and injuries are most often on a par with the French (70%), while the Spanish sit at the head of the ranking of horns (66%). The Swedes, good students (like the Dutch) in several categories, are nevertheless champions in speeding (92%) and not respecting the safety distance (74%). They are also most likely to take their eyes off the road for at least two seconds (88%).

The French survey was conducted on a sample of 2,400 French people aged 16 and over who were interviewed online between February 28 and March 9.
