It’s the highest-grossing game ever crowdfunded, one of the best-looking PC games ever made – as well as one of the most ambitious – but it hasn’t had the best support for virtual reality until now. Before the original Oculus DK1 even started shipping, Star CitizenThe developers have promised robust VR integration. That may finally arrive this year.
Lead developer Chris Roberts announced the change during a year-end livestream, saying there are many VR updates Cloud Imperium needs to implement in Star Citizen, but that he was busy with the latest Alpha 2.0 and 2.1 updates. However, in the year ahead, he said he would push to bring “the guys to Frankfurt” to work on better VR implementation (via RoadToVR).
While a few guys in a certain town might not sound like much, Roberts explained that it was these people who helped develop some of Crytek’s early VR efforts, laying the groundwork for more recent, landmark VR games like Rise and Robinson: The Journey.
Roberts also insisted on this Star Citizen it would support all the major virtual reality headsets – which for now means the Oculus Rift CV1 and HTC Vive – but there are probably some more not too far away.
Still, with more than $100 million in crowdfunding, that’s not what anyone’s worried about Star Citizen will not have the resources or manpower to fail to deliver on this promise. Some might be a little worried about moving the game’s release date though. Originally planned to be released at the end of 2014, more than a year later we are still not in sight of a full release.
Sure, there have been a lot of modules and the game is getting closer and closer to its finished state, but are you happy with the additional development taking up more time for Cloud Imperium?
