Stephenie Simmons is an unconventional cook. Only during the pandemic did she focus on cooking, and the following year she was invited to participate in Hulu’s competition series Secret Chef. Apparently she joined the show. Why? “To prove it to myself,” she said.

Stephenie Simmons on Hulu’s Secret Chef
Cooking shows become a hit! No wonder, Hulu came out with one, only with a little twist where the contestants are also the judges. Their new show Secret Chef features ten contestants with varying degrees of skill in the kitchen — food preparation, tasting and final ranking.
According to one of the contestants, Stephenie Simmons, Secret Chef is a cross between Love Is Blind and Top Chef. “We all have different pseudonyms and cook in secret,” she said. “We don’t really know anything about each other.”
As previously mentioned, the chefs are isolated in the kitchens so that anonymity can be maintained among the cast, and everyone judges each other’s dishes blindly, deciding whose is the best and who goes home based on the presentation and taste of the dish alone. There are a total of three rounds for each dish. Afterwards, the chefs return to their tasting rooms and fill out review cards. The chef with the lowest rated dish is eliminated.
But that doesn’t mean it’s every man for himself. In the premiere episode, we saw a participant hand in hand with an anonymous partner to create a dish together — but only one person could be in the kitchen at a time. One person starts cooking, then stops and leaves the kitchen before their partner enters and picks up where the first cook left off.
“It was so hard,” Stephenie recalled. “From the first episode, you will see that what happens is not what you expect. It was a game.”

Career of Stephenie Simmons
Stephenie Simmons initially began her career in social work. While studying biology, pre-med/pre-med at Seattle University from 2012 to 2016, she worked as a Prep Step Healthcare Scholar at COPE Health Solutions and a Night Hawk Dispatcher/Driver and Multicultural Student Government Representative for the university.
After graduation, she then became a team leader for community health workers at UnitedHealth Group for two years before finally becoming a science teacher at Success Preparatory Academy in New Orleans.
So when COVID shut down the world, Stephenie returned to Washington and explored her interest in cannabis-infused cooking while also working as a private chef and food delivery person, providing community meals with a focus on farm-to-table cooking.
The following year, she was then recruited to be a Secret Chef in November 2021 through her Instagram account where she posted photos of the dishes she prepared.
After she finished filming, she went on to work at Communion Restaurant and Bar in Seattle. “It was such an important place for me to go to later,” she said. “I heard so much about it before I moved away, and I wanted to be a part of a really black, rich experience here in Seattle.”
Most recently, she worked for the Gold Coast Ghal Kitchen pop-up and managed catering for the Seattle Public Schools’ John Stanford Center.
Now Stephenie is also honing her cooking skills at Seattle Central College.
