Sterrt! Letterkenny’s Roald and Stewart on skid love, gaming, and season 11

In today’s television environment, it’s increasingly rare for a show to get a second season, let alone 11, of the acclaimed seasons that carkenny delivered to his fans.

The award-winning Canadian sitcom about the residents of a fictional town in rural Ontario captures the interactions between the town’s various cliques, known informally as rednecks, skaters, hockey players, natives and degens, amidst a flux constant of agile, clumsy dialogues. fistfights, Canadian colloquialisms, and even the occasional break to dance.

While series creator Jared Keeso’s character Wayne reportedly leads the show’s cast, two rising stars carkenny they are a pair of gothic drug dealers whose criminal escapades have taken them to the big city and back throughout the series. “Skids” ringleaders Stewart and Roald, played by Tyler Johnston and Evan Stern, have become fan favorites (and popular subjects of fanfiction) as their relationship has evolved with each passing season.

with season 11 carkenny Now available to stream on Hulu, Digital Trends spoke with Johnston and Stern about developing the duo’s partnership, fan recognition, streaming on Twitch and letterkenny live experience.

Digital Trends: Stewart and Roald’s relationship has developed quite a bit since the first few seasons. How would you describe your dynamic these days?

Evan Stern: Best friends, for sure. And maybe… lovers?

Tyler Johnston: Are we still talking about Roald and Stewart?

Stern: I’d say we’ve gone from a more control and submission dynamic to something a little more, well…Tyler has realized that in recent seasons. He said: “I don’t like how much independence Roald has now!” There was definitely a little arc where Roald gets a little more, well…let’s call it powers?

Johnston: Yes, it has changed. And I think in Stewart’s case he realized that…close…friends like Roald don’t come around every day.

Stern: Hardly ever, for sure.

Johnston: I think Stewart came to appreciate his… friend… Roald more and more.

Stern: You keep saying “friend,” but I think you’re looking for a different word here.

I appreciate the very clear quotes around the word “friend” every time you say it.

Stern: Yeah, it’s always like, “are we… friends?”

Some of my favorite moments on the show are when everyone comes together around something in common. How are those moments on your side?

Johnston: They don’t want us in the room anymore. They set the bar!

Stern: It’s amazing to work with all the people in the cast. When you walk in and see 10 of your best friends in the room and they’re like, “Okay everyone, let’s get to work,” you’re like, “Okay, sure!” It’s just a nice feeling.

Johnston: It’s really, really fun. Sometimes it’s like the Royal Rumble. Put all the characters in a room and let them in. We are all professionals, but some of us try to make each other laugh. Those are usually very, very good days, but Jacob [Tierney, series co-writer and director] and our assistant director usually needs to calm us down, almost all the time.

Stern: Yeah, that’s fair… We got barked at a couple of times.

carkenny he has such a wonderful fandom. What was the point when you realized that this was something special, that you were part of a show that people would quote you wherever you went?

Stern: I was walking home one night after drinking and these two guys from Ireland picked me up and started carrying me around like I was in a chair and said, “We love each other.” carkenny!” I said, “This is crazy.” He didn’t know who these guys were, but he was like, “Oh wow, we’ve touched Ireland.” It was a moment for me, for sure.

It could have gone the other way around. I’m glad it worked!

Stern: Right?!

Johnston: Like, “I was drinking and these guys grabbed me and took me…”

Stern: They picked me up so easily! I mean, I know I’m small, but wow!

Johnston: There were a few moments in this carkenny trip for me One was during the early seasons, when Dylan [Playfair] and andrija [Herr] they were in Canadian TV commercials all the time between hockey and soccer games. You couldn’t get away from seeing Andrew and Dylan, [who play] Reilly and Jonesy, everywhere.

Another moment was when I went to the airport here in Vancouver and there was a big sign at the airport carkenny commercial. That was really cool, and then of course when the Hulu sale happened, it took everything up a notch.

Stern: We’ve gone international, honey!

Tyler Johnston and Evan Stern frown at the camera in a scene from Letterkenny.

Johnston: Like Evan, he was actually in Edinburgh. [Scotland] with Andrew, and the bartender at this bar we were in didn’t recognize me, but he recognized Andrew. He says, “Are you the guy from carkenny?” Andrew said, “Do you know the show?” He said, “Yeah, my roommates introduced me to the show and we all love it.” Andrew and I still had to pay for our drinks, but…

Stern: …so it was just a horrible experience overall.

Johnston: Yes, absolutely. But no, really, it ended up being a pretty cool experience.

I guess you probably don’t get recognized that often without the wig and stuff, Tyler.

Johnston: Not as much as some of our other actors, no.

Stern: Yeah, you fly under the radar. I was surprised that you wanted to cut your hair in that episode where you had to reveal the true shape of your face!

Where do you hope to see Roald and Stewart in the upcoming seasons? What scenarios would you like to see explore skating?

Stern: I’d like to see Roald and Stewart do something in the city at some point and get into that city a little bit more, just to see why the city is so dangerous and why the city is so bad for them. I feel like there are a lot of opportunities to explore that. We had something of that a few seasons ago, with the drug dealer and how dangerous it can be. [party drug] GHB and all that, but I think we can get a little more…

Johnston: He wants more danger!

Stern: I want more danger. I want little greater danger!

Johnston: I think they should become accountants and try to settle down and do the math. You’ll start thinking like, “Oh my gosh, skating has really settled down and is relaxed. They do a great job!”

Stern: And then… tax evasion!

Johnston: Money laundering!

Stern: Organized crime!

this feels great breaking bad

Stern: Well, better, obviously…

Evan, you’ve been streaming a lot on Twitch lately. I saw you play during letterkenny live tour and transmission. What is your experience with Twitch and what are you playing these days?

Stern: Here’s the thing: Tyler really is my biggest fan. Every time I stream on Twitch, I see a little “tylerjbjohnston” tag in the chat. It’s always like, “Hey, dude! How are you doing, my friend?”

Johnston: I’m like, “I love you! I support you!”

Stern: And then I put my phone on silent. …But I love Twitch. I love the opportunity to connect with the fans one on one, because they come in and we have conversations. We can play together! we played a lot valorant now. It’s a first person shooter and it’s beautiful. And yes, Tyler is very supportive and comforting when I see my coworker come over to say hello from time to time…

Johnston: Associate? Or… friend?

Stern: Right. I was trying to convince him to join Twitch and play a game with me. And I think he’s close. I think we almost got him.

Johnston: What games do you play, Rick?

I’m still catching up on some games. I just received a PlayStation 5.

Stern: Oh, congratulations!

Johnston: Good luck! You finally got one!

circling letterkenny live tour, I got to see one of the shows, and it was a really fun experience. How was it for you two doing the live version of the series?

stern: which letterkenny live What show did you go to?

The one in Albany, New York. You weren’t really into it, Evan. I think you were under the weather.

Johnston: It was probably a hit, that one.

Stern: Heard this one was bullshit.

It was great, but we miss you, Evan. How was the live tour?

Johnston: I would give it a 25 out of 10, Rick. There’s so much energy when you go on stage. I don’t do stand-up comedy, but I can imagine being able to stand on stage and knowing that people will laugh at whatever you say, no matter what you say, is a pretty safe feeling. And to personally share the energy of this incredible show with our fans was very special.

Stern: Yeah, it was great. One thing we also had to share with each other was the bus ride. I thought I would surely get tired of those people. I prepared myself to say, “Well, I’m not going to talk to Tyler for another year after this.” But we were closer than ever after the tour. It was a really nice experience.
