In a recent, private interview with Young Atlas, a platform for creatives situated in Harlem, New York, Nipsey’s former music manager, Steve Lobel, recalled fond memories of the “Dedication” rapper.
In a segment from the interview, Lobel discusses his friendship with Nipsey, calling him the “smartest” musician he has ever collaborated with. He also notes the moniker “Maniac Lobel” that Nipsey gave him.
Later, Lobel talks about how long it took to advance Nipsey’s career and solemnly mentions how stunning Nipsey appeared in his coffin during his funeral on April 11.
Lobel continues by describing how, in the early years of Def Jam Recordings and Rush Management, the late Jam Master Jay took him under his wing and helped him get his start.
Working with artists like Common, 8Ball & MJG, and Fat Joe helped the New York City native become legendary in the 1990s. Later, he was in charge of Bizzy Bone, Sean Kingston, and Nipsey of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
In other parts of the interview, Lobel talks about reviving Scott Storch’s career, remaining relevant in the rapidly evolving music business, and his transition from managing to now “consulting” artists like the charismatic rapper Tsu Surf from Newark, New Jersey, who also happens to be a member of the Rollin’ 60s Crips.
