Steven Kwan becoming a Rookie of the Year finalist after the 2022 season wasn’t something many, if any, people expected at this time last year. Despite this, he became one of the Guardians’ best hitters in his first season in the Majors, while also becoming a defensive mainstay in left field.
Kwan had a fantastic season, so the question arises whether he will not have a regression. However, for several reasons, this does not seem likely to happen.
Kwan made a name for himself by excelling at the plate. He didn’t hit for power or home runs, but he made pitchers work and still got on base. Due to his discipline at the plate, Kwan will most likely pick up where he left off in 2023.
The outfielder’s 2022 K% and Wiff% were in the 100th percentile, and his strikeout rate was in the 96th percentile. This kind of big board presence can’t be taught, and Kwan definitely has it innately.
Kwan had already gone through a period of adjustment and it was obvious that he had come out of it much stronger. May was an extremely difficult month for him; in 85 plate appearances he averaged just 173 batters and 13 hits. Being only his second month in the Major Leagues, this could have ruined the rookie hitter.
After recovering, he had a month in June with an .801 OPS and twice as many hits as in May. Kwan didn’t hit much in May, but he also didn’t hit much. He struck out just six times in those 85 plate appearances. This shows that Kwan can use his plate discipline to immediately recover from a fall, even if it does happen.
There’s a chance Kwan won’t hit .300 again, but even if he did, .285 or .290 wouldn’t be considered a setback. Additionally, as long as he maintains a high OPS, he will continue to be a productive leadoff hitter.
In the end, Kwan is just a pure bully. He waits for the right shot while sitting in the box before he strikes. As long as he keeps this attitude, he’ll be a great big leaguer.
