Strictly star Angela Scanlon left furious by producer’s jibe and being told what to wear as she filmed BBC show

NEW Strictly contestant Angela Scanlon has spoken of her horror when she discovered a television executive wanted her to be “a little glam” on the family’s favorite show.

The star, 39, was shocked that the producer wanted to make suggestions for her outfit in BBC Two’s Robot Wars – and described her as “s*ss and teeth” in the show.

She said: “I remember being absolutely furious. I said, ‘There’s no way I’m walking around an industrial estate in a miniskirt for two weeks.'”

Scanlon — who presents Your Home Made Perfect on BBC Two — is expected to become a household name on Strictly.

But speaking on the Fashion As A Force For Good podcast last month, she revealed how she filmed Robot Wars alongside Dara O’Briain from 2016 to 2018.

She said about the producer: “I think in his mind I was the glamour, which was never a role I felt. I had a feeling at the time, but I thought, ‘Maybe I’m just being paranoid’. “Then, after that, a friend called and said, ‘How are you? How is everything going?’.

“He said, ‘Just be careful.’ I said, ‘Go on.’ He said, ‘Well, I was interviewing and this person said, ‘So the show is Dara O’Briain and this chick Angela Scanlon — she’s t*ts and teeth.’ He actually said that.

“This was maybe eight years ago. I remember being absolutely furious, but I was really glad they warned me because it kind of confirmed my thoughts.”

She explained how the producer then met with her to discuss what she would wear while filming the series in 2016, which was set in a warehouse in Scotland.

I said, ‘It doesn’t matter.’ They said, ‘Yeah, I know, I just think we need a bit of glam’. I said, ‘There’s absolutely no way I’m walking around an industrial estate in a miniskirt for two weeks’.

“It seemed so reductive and so presumptuous that I came with pursed lips and legs out to entertain the boys and that was my value.”

Instead, she wore a denim jumpsuit during the shoot.

In light of the comments, Claire Reindorp, chief executive of the Young Women’s Foundation, told The Sun on Sunday: “Discrimination in the workplace is very much alive and well. In our latest annual survey, 42 percent of young women told us they had faced discrimination, and three in ten said they had experienced sexual harassment.”

A BBC spokesman declined to comment on the matter.

Angela’s comments are a new embarrassment for the corporation after it was embroiled in sexism in January over coverage of Jacinda Ardern’s departure as New Zealand prime minister.

BBC World News tweeted an article with the headline: “Jacinda Ardern resigns: Can women really have it all?” He later deleted the tweet and changed the title.

Angela, who was born in Co Meath, Ireland, now lives in North London with her businessman husband Roy Horgan and their two young daughters.

Since 2016, she has been the host of The One Show in the absence of Alex Jones.

In 2021, she revealed that she was “devastated” when her role in Robot Wars “fell through” in 2018 after giving birth to her eldest daughter.

But announcing the news of her Strictly role, Angela told BBC Radio 2: “I’m not particularly fit and I have no idea how my pelvic floor will react to that level of jumping. I’ve never done any of these dances except a drunken jive at a family wedding.”

She is due to appear alongside comedian Les Dennis, 69, West End star Layton Williams, 28, and former journalist Angela Rippon, 78.
