AT FIRST glance, this photo looks like a normal color image of a group of teenagers, but it’s actually an optical illusion because it’s black and white.
London digital artist Stuart Humphryes shared the image on Twitter, explaining how it demonstrates “the illusion of a web of color assimilation.”

London-based digital artist Stuart Humphryes shared this image in black and white, but applied a color grid on top to make the entire photo appear to be in colour.
You just added a grid with colored lines over a black and white image.
Stuart explained how our brain “fills in the gap” in color perception and applies the color of the grid to the entire image.
In the frame, the teenagers’ shirts are green, blue, yellow, or red, and the tree behind them is green.
However, if you look closely, you can see that the image is actually a grayscale with no color in the clothing or surrounding nature.
Stuart’s photo went viral on Twitter, with many people saying they were in awe of the illusion.
Stuart explained: “This is fascinating and shows how weak the color information in a photo can be for your brain to fill in the gaps and ‘color’ it for you.
“It’s a black and white photograph, but superimposed with a thin grid of colored lines. They are enough to trick your mind into seeing the full color picture.”
One confused person replied: “It totally works for me. I am delighted. Good test to start the day.”
Another added: “That’s remarkable.”
Vision scientist Bart Anderson from the University of Sydney previously explained the phenomenon for Science Alert 2019.
He said: “The color system is what vision scientists call ‘low pass’, meaning many receptive fields that code for color are quite large.”
“Therefore, the gratings are ‘interlaced’ with the achromatic background, which is then assigned to that part of the image.”
