Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League: release date, trailers, gameplay, and more

Rocksteady made a name for itself as one of the first teams to make the universally acclaimed superhero game with Batman: Arkham Asylum. He followed that success with two more sequels Batman: Arkham City and discord, though still fantastic Batman: Arkham Knight. Fans were left waiting to hear what this studio would tackle next. Most assumed it would be another DC property, since it is owned by Warner Bros. Games, and those suspicions turned out to be right on the money, albeit with assets that many wouldn’t have predicted.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was officially announced as Rocksteady’s latest project at the DC FanDome event in 2020. At the time, aside from the graphic novels, of course, we only had one failed movie based on this group of anti-heroes, so many fans were hesitant to see them tackle the property. However, now that we’ve gotten a few trailers and gameplay footage, it’s clear that Rocksteady hasn’t lost its touch. We’ve taken over this suicide mission for you and escaped with all the details you need to know Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Trailer

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Official Game Trailer – “Flash and Burn” | DC

The first real trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League came to the Game Awards 2021. This trailer was only three minutes long, but it was our first real look at the game in action. We open with Captain Boomerang making a video of himself taunting the squad’s current target, The Flash, before being interrupted by the man himself. Other heroes mentioned include Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern.

After the cut, we learn from Deadshot that The Flash, for reasons unknown, is either working for or under the control of the villain Brainiac. After repeated orders to kill him, the squad goes into action in a montage that shows each member moving around the city and fighting mutated techno monsters. Eventually, they meet Flash again and begin a fight. We get a close up of his face, with glowing red eyes and dark veins showing through his cheeks, strongly implying some form of mind control.

The trailer continues with a ton more gameplay footage, which we’ll cover in the next section, before the final encounter with the Flash. This time, he runs circles around the team, literally, to create a giant tornado. It ends with Captain Boomerang about to throw a boomerang at Flash, who is somehow charging some kind of energy ball between his hands. After the cut, it looks like the Suicide Squad have won – until a huge explosion of light interrupts their celebration.

A step back for those who might be confused, what is Suicide Squad anyway? Well, in this game specifically, they’re a group made up of DC villains like Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark, who are engaged to a woman named Amanda Waller. Their mission? Well, kill the Justice League, obviously. So far, we know that this version of the Justice League will at least consist of Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the Flash, if the names dropped by Captain Boomerang are any indication. Other possible members, based on other iterations of the superhero team, could include The Martian, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Cyborg and others. Of course, we don’t expect everyone to show up, but there could be a few surprises.

We can also reasonably expect Batman to be in this game as Rocksteady has confirmed it Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will take place in the same universe as the Arkham series. No spoiling Arkham Knight, however, that would all depend on when this game would be played in that series.

However, the big villain definitely seems to be Brainiac. Not only does he seem to have somehow taken control of the members of the Justice League, but also the entire city the game takes place in, with giant mechanical creatures and structures everywhere.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – Official Co-Play | Games for PS5

While the February 2023 State of Play announcement focused on co-op gameplay, it did provide some interesting stories to look at. Once again, the trailer focuses on the squad hunting down The Flash and rescuing Lex Luthor. First, the team must destroy a massive mortar.

After they take him down and prepare to save Lex, they are overpowered by the Flash. Wonder Woman appears and is the first member of the League we see without Brainiac’s control. She uses her lasso of truth to subdue The Flash and learns that the only way to save the Justice League and the world from Brainiac is to kill the Justice League.

Not to be confused with Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is an open world game that you can play alone or with three friends in co-op. If you’re playing alone, you’ll choose one of the squads to control directly, with the ability to jump between them at will. Anyone not under control will be taken over by the AI. It will be set in the open world of Metropolis, which you will be able to explore in various ways.

Since there are four main characters, each of them has their own way of playing. Essentially, it looks like the core gameplay will be an expanded version of what we got with the Arkham series. We’re seeing tons of flashy attacks, grabs, and special moves unique to each character, as well as a more robust system of ranged options and different ways to traverse.

King Shark, for example, can make huge leaps, run straight up walls, kind of like the Hulk or Spider-Man, and has hand-to-hand punches, grapples, a pair of hook weapons, and a mini-gun for ranged attacks. Deadshot, on the other hand, moves around using his jetpack, fires automatic and explosive weapons, and can get a little closer with his gauntlet guns. We don’t know if the rhythm-based combat that made the Arkham games so satisfying will return, or if it will be a more traditional third-person action game.

The structure of the game, apart from being open world, also remains a question mark. Hopefully they’ll let players choose which member of the Justice League we want to follow, though they’ll probably keep Superman locked up until last. We might even accidentally bump into a member when we least expect it. Freeing the city from Brainiac’s control is another system we suspect. Ridding the area of the strange fodder creatures we see and weakening his control over the city could play a role in freeing the League from his control.

There will be six types of weapons as well as different types of equipment you can equip, each with different effects, strengths and weaknesses. This also affects your character’s equipment rating which will dictate which missions you can take on.

Fortunately, you can wear any costume you want without having to worry about it affecting your stats or equipment score.

That, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is built to be a single-player and co-op experience. This is a first for Rocksteady, but it makes sense given the team-based nature of the game. You can play with up to three of your friends together, each leading another member into battle. What we don’t know is how they will handle moving forward. This has been tricky for the developers lately so we just hope it’s not another situation where only the main player is progressing or continues to progress, but we’ll have to wait for details on this one.

Rocksteady has confirmed that they will support Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League after launch with new characters, weapons and missions. It is still not clear whether they will be free or paid. The team also announced a Battle Pass with unlockable cosmetic items, which we still don’t know the details about.
