Super chatty today? Check out Chatible to chat with a stranger on Messenger

Facebook MessengerTechCrunch Are you adventurous and interested in meeting new people? Able to talk to anyone? A new bot called Chatible may become your new best friend, or at least help you find one. Think of it as a throwback to those old days on AIM chat rooms when people asked others they had just met about their A/S/L (age, gender and location).

Sure, it was a little creepy in retrospect, but maybe time has lessened the stigma against chatting with strangers online. So if you want to connect with a complete random on Facebook Messenger for the purpose of starting a conversation, check out Chatible and see where the conversation takes you.

While there are a number of other apps that do the same thing, Chatible integrates easily with Messenger, which is already a hugely popular platform (albeit mostly for people who already know each other). To get started with the app, you sign in with Facebook, and then you’re instantly randomly matched with another resident of the Internet. The messages will appear in your Facebook inbox and there is no set agenda for what you are talking about. So really anything is fair game (which of course can present its own set of problems).

The conversations that have happened and found their way onto Product Hunt so far have seemed perfectly pleasant and PG, but there don’t seem to be any safeguards in place to protect against the creepier content. However, Chatible does not reveal your identity and all information remains confidential. As the app states on its own Facebook page, “while Chatible is essentially an ‘intermediary’ that facilitates these conversations, we greatly value your privacy and will neither review nor disclose these messages.”

The app seems to have become quite popular very quickly, as Chatible’s team announced a few hours ago that the bot “will be down for the next few hours for maintenance…due to massive traffic.” As a result, Chatible was forced to upgrade its servers — a pretty big deal.

So if you’re into random chat, check out Chatible — you never know what you might find.
