The Supreme Court, India’s highest governing body, on November 7 ordered a nationwide ban on firecrackers. The court advised all state governments to address the issue of pollution, including air and noise pollution. The ban comes ahead of Diwali when bursting firecrackers is a common tradition.

A division bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh ordered on appeal that appropriate measures be taken to combat air pollution in Udaipur. The SC said, “In this regard, it is pointed out that such steps should be aimed at preventing air and noise pollution. Although objections have been filed to the said suit in relation to the air quality index, at this time we are of the opinion that no specific orders would be necessary in the suit since this court in the course of disposal of the suit has passed several orders indicating steps for abatement and avoidance air pollution as well as noise. Therefore, the said orders would bind every state in this country including the state of Rajasthan.”

Celebrations can make others happy, but not at the cost of the environment.” Justice Bopanna said that adults are in a worse position than children when it comes to bursting crackers as they do not pay any attention to the harmful effects of toxic fumes. He stressed the need for stricter regulations and awareness campaigns. awareness in order to educate the public about the harmful effects of fireworks on human health and the environment.

The SC also announced that there will be no complete ban on the use of firecrackers. There is a ban on certain types of firecrackers, those that use barium and prohibited compounds. These crackers not only contribute to air pollution, but are also hazardous to health.
