T-Mobile has found another way to differentiate itself from the competition, by not sneaking up on us when we visit another country and dare to use our phone. Announced at an event in New York this week, T-Mobile will soon allow subscribers on its Simple Choice plans to use their data at no extra cost in more than 100 countries around the world.

International roaming is shockingly expensive. In his typically abrupt fashion, T-Mobile CEO John Legere said that “we’re forced to pay insanely inflated fees for international connectivity,” and coming home to “bill shock” happens all too often. He also gave some worrying statistics, saying that 40 per cent of travelers had turned off data roaming while abroad, but 20 per cent did not know how to do it, leaving 40 per cent who choose to pay potentially huge costs, often because they don’t know or have the time come up with an alternative.

T-Mobile wants more users. The new option does not require activation or payment; it will only work from October 31. Right now, Simple Choice subscribers – personal and business – will have unlimited data and text when they visit one of 100 countries – called Simple Global countries – plus a flat rate of $0.20 per minute for voice calls.

How can he afford it? According to NBC News, Legere says his subscribers don’t use their phones overseas very often, so he can easily fit the terms he’s set with international networks, even with the expected influx of new members. In addition, T-Mobile offers high-speed roaming plans, which are charged extra per month, where you could get some money back.

Additionally, T-Mobile has introduced Stateside International Talk & Text, which will suit those who are not traveling but still want to call or text international numbers. That’s an additional $10 per month for Simple Choice customers and caps calls at $0.20 per minute to all countries on the Simple Global list, including mobile-to-mobile calls. Most landline calls will be covered by the banner indefinitely, and text messages are also covered.

Finally, T-Mobile has jumped on the celebrity endorsement bandwagon, joining everyone from BlackBerry to Intel. To demonstrate his new plans, he hired Shakira. Shakira was quoted as saying, “I’m excited to partner with T-Mobile and look forward to sharing my music in new and innovative ways.” Of course you do, Shakira.

T-Mobile’s unlimited roaming plan is available on October 31st, and a list of eligible countries can be found here.
