Teal Pumpkins have a deeper meaning this Halloween, check out what it is

Halloween has always painted the town orange. However, this year it is accompanied by a hopeful blue-green color on the porches and lights.

Just as the boot on the fence and the color on the tree have a certain meaning, blue-blue pumpkins also carry a message for the onlookers. Just as the boot on the fence and the paint on the tree have a certain meaning, the blue-green pumpkins also carry a message for the onlookers.

Here’s what they mean, how they help kids, and how to get one for yourself.

Teal Pumpkin – Meaning

If you see a blue pumpkin on someone’s doorstep while trick-or-treating, it means that the house offers non-food toys or trinkets in addition to candy.

Non-food items include pop-up toys, playing cards, glow sticks, pencil tips, and temporary tattoos!

These teal Halloween pumpkins are part of the Teal Pumpkin Project, started by the nonprofit organization Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE).

Teal Pumpkin – Benefits for children

Halloween candy handed out contains one of seven major food allergens: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy and sesame.

According to FARE, 1 in 13 children in America is allergic to some food. Consequently, 42% of such children experienced severe allergic reactions during the spooky night.

Therefore, the Teal Pumpkin Project ensures that children stay safe while still enjoying the holiday spirit.

Teal Pumpkin – Where can I buy one?

This year, CVS Health partnered with FARE to provide blue-green pumpkins and more than 100 non-food toys for purchase.

More than 7,000 CVS stores across America will carry these non-food toys, many of which cost less than $5.

Brian Eason, Vice President of General Merchandise and Consumables shared in a press release, “Our partnership with FARE has made it possible to meet the needs of every child and encourage inclusive celebrations while also raising awareness of FARE’s important mission.”

Teal Pumpkin – Make one yourself

If you want to voluntarily participate in the initiative, you can always take brushes and paint your pumpkins blue!

To double the fun, along with the candy, make your own crafts – stickers, stencils, bookmarks, finger puppets and other fun items.

When you’re ready with your anti-allergy treats, add your house to the interactive map above so the witch can find your abode.

Enjoy a safe and spooky Halloween!
