The Arc Pulse is a barely there case for your iPhone 13

When you think about it, the best Apple iPhone 13 cases have a number of different tasks. A case has to look good, your iPhone 13 has to look good and protect it from common drops and spills. For most, this means a rubber or plastic (or both) cover that surrounds your phone in a protective layer and keeps it safe. But is it the only design? Arc doesn’t think so.

I’ve been using the Arc Pulse Case on my iPhone 13 Pro for three weeks and there’s a lot to talk about. One of the biggest of these is the fact that there isn’t much to talk about. Confused? That’s why we wanted to draw your attention to it.

Less is more

The guiding principle behind the Arc case is to give you 90% of protection with roughly 10% of the case. The Arc comes in two metal pieces with a rubberized SEBS layer that is 100% recyclable inside. The type of metal depends on which one you buy: titanium or aluminum.

The top fits over the top corners of the phone and around the camera bump. The lower part fits the back and bottom corner of the phone. The rubberized material on the inside gives the case a grip, so while you’d think these pieces would just fall off, they don’t. They are actually quite difficult to remove, which is a good thing.

The theory here is that if you drop your phone, the parts will protect the corners, back and front of the phone, including the camera module. Basically, the theory is good. You can put the phone on its side, front or back, and no part of the phone touches the table. In the meantime, you can still enjoy the iPhone’s design, like its thinness or color, even if Apple hasn’t brought back Pacific Blue. I hope one day to stop being bitter about it.

Back to the case, the front is raised, so even the front of the phone won’t be affected if you drop the phone face down. The only parts of the phone that are not protected (that would be the bumper) are the side moldings and the back panel of the phone. In a situation where you drop your phone down a flight of stairs, I suppose you might lack the full protection of a protective case, but that’s about it when it comes to drops.

What about the other 10%?

But scratching is another story. If you regularly carry two phones in the same pocket, or if you carry your keys in the same pocket as your phone, stop it. But also, this cover will not protect the back or side of your phone from those objects. It’s also possible (though I haven’t personally tested it) that this case might scratch the screens of other phones. So the lesson I learned here is that phone pockets should only be phone pockets.

If you’re wondering how the holster holds or takes it out of your pocket, I can tell you it’s fine. In fact, Arc Pulse gives you even more power to pull your phone out and hold it. No complaints. Another added benefit is warmth. Most TPU cases trap the heat the phone generates when it’s charging or under load, and the Arc Pulse allows it to dissipate.

Speaking of charging, the Arc Pulse case also allows MagSafe charging to work seamlessly. Some MagSafe-compatible cases don’t have the magnetic strength that a phone has, so in the case of a car mount, the phone may pop out. Of course, there are some well-made cases — like the Brooklyn Snap case I use from Zagg — that are just as strong.

It’s not for me

After a few weeks with the Arc Pulse case, I went back to the Zagg case. The main reason was trust. I can tell you all day that Arc Pulse will prevent damage 90% of the time, I even believe it, but my lizard brain doesn’t believe it. Plus, as someone who resells their phone every year to fund their next one, I want the phone to be as pristine as possible, and that includes the side mounts and back panel.

All in all, this is a nice case. And minimalists, it could work great. The design is certainly polarizing. It’s the kind of design you’ll either love or hate, but either way, it’s a great conversation starter. It’s just not for me.
