Renée Marcelle Jeanmaire, known for the song “My thing made of feathers”, died Friday in Switzerland.
Dancer and music-hall singer Zizi Jeanmaire, known for her feather trick and whose career is closely linked to that of choreographer Roland Petit, who died on Friday at the age of 96, his family announced.
“My mother died peacefully that night at her home in Tolochenaz, in the canton of Vaud,” her daughter, Valentine Petit, told AFP by phone. A public ceremony will be held in her honor in September, she said.
The announcement of his death caused numerous reactions in the world of dance. “We are leaving an exceptional woman and artist. Zizi Jeanmaire remains forever in our memory, unique and inimitable. Zizi, we love you,” Manuel Legris, a former star dancer at the Paris Opera, wrote on Instagram. “We will never forget dear Zizi,” commented former étoile Marie-Agnès Gillot.

A long and remarkable career
The Little Rats of Opera, critically acclaimed decades later for her Thing in a Feather, Zizi Jeanmaire pushed the boundaries between classical dance and music hall during a career of extraordinary longevity. Renée Jeanmaire was born on April 29, 1924, in the bar of the Paris Opera dance school, which would later be called “Zizi”, meeting the future choreographer and her future husband, Roland Petit, who died in 2011. They were only 9 years.
He entered the venerable house in 1933, joined the corps de ballet seven years later, then left at the end of World War II. “Roland, he wanted to set up his own company,” he said in an interview with AFP in 2008. It would be the Ballets des Champs-Elysées, and then those of Paris.

In 1970, the couple took over the management of the Casino de Paris. Roland Petit then founded the company des Ballets de Marseille.
