What hasn’t changed is the fact that this paranormal third-person shooter is far from an easy game. You must use your morphing Service Weapon and telekinetic abilities in tandem to be successful, and this is only possible if you max out your ability upgrades. Separate from the mods you can apply to Jesse and her weapons, ability upgrades allow you to improve several attributes using points you earn during normal play. Ability upgrades are essentially a “skill tree”. Control. As you progress through the story and complete key missions, you’ll earn upgrade points that you can spend on improving your stats. They are not the same as mods and are multiples, meaning the fifth upgrade you get in a category can only be unlocked after unlocking the first four. You can’t unlock new ability upgrades everywhere. Instead, you’ll need to visit a checkpoint, which serves as a fast travel destination Control.
Unlike mods, you won’t need any additional resources to craft skill upgrades. This will make the process of improving Jessie’s abilities much easier and faster if you are having trouble in a certain area. However, upgrade points are not plentiful. This means you’ll need to prioritize the upgrades you want, and identifying the most appropriate ones to focus on will make this a lot easier.
There is another benefit to unlocking ability upgrades, and that involves your mods. As you continue to spend points, the progress bar will fill up at the bottom of the upgrade screen. The first level of unlocking will give you an additional weapon form slot. Then the other two will complement another single mod spot. We suggest checking to see if you have any cool mods ready to equip them.
What ability upgrades should you focus on?

If you control using a particular playstyle that you’ll likely want to use in Control, you can easily adjust your ability upgrades to accommodate it. We focused on a mobile and aggressive build for our gameplay that rarely stayed in one place for more than a few seconds. Because of this, some skill upgrades like Shield were not useful. Below we’ve listed some ability upgrades we think you should unlock first to increase your chances of survival.
- Health: Each unlocked level gives you additional total health. Health upgrades are vital in Control and you can remove the health focused mod if you have enough unlocked here.
- Energy: Not as vital as health, but you use energy for everything from dodging to throwing items. Every now and then it helps you defeat enemies in battles.
- Launch: Increases the amount of damage done by your Launch ability. It is decisively to focus on this early, as it will allow you to kill weaker enemies without needing your gun as a follow-up attack. An optional unlock will also allow you to throw projectiles back at enemies.
- Capture: Increases the amount of time an enemy will be under your control and can take pressure off Jesse in a rush fight.
