The best guns in Dead Space

If there is one thing dead space best known for it, he must use his unique selection of mining tools and guns to dismember the hideous mutated corpses that roam the USG Ishimura. Fortunately, the team at EA Motive has only enhanced this experience in their remake of the popular survival horror title, implementing several updates to protagonist Isaac Clarke’s improvised weapons to ensure that even returning players may want to rethink their favorite accessories. Read on to see what we consider the best weapons dead space and where you should focus your upgrades.

Equip these guns

These four guns tend to be useful in a variety of scenarios and are worth keeping equipped in the weapon slot throughout the game.

Plasma gun

The plasma pistol is the first weapon you’ll come across in the game, and in many ways it’s the best. While some other guns may be better at certain things – especially crowd control or brute force – the Plasma Rifle’s rapid fire and ability to rotate its beam help make it an extremely powerful all-around weapon that’s ideal for slicing up necromorphs. When upgrading this rifle, focus on hitting nodes that increase your damage and capacity so you can hit hard while reloading less often.

Pulse rifle

The Pulse Rifle is another gun found fairly early on, and it may seem like a weak option at first compared to the Plasma Gun, but it can be a real beast once you invest in some upgrades. Perhaps the most exciting thing about this assault rifle is its secondary fire, which can release a proximity mine, allowing you to set some nasty traps for those nasty necromorphs. Your upgrades for this one should focus on moving directly up the track so you can throw a node into the Kinect Autoloader (SP1) and greatly increase your rate of fire.

Contact Beam

The contact beam is found in the first few hours and is the most powerful weapon in the game in terms of raw damage, but it doesn’t do much for you in terms of slicing. Use it against enemies that you just need to blast quickly with its powerful beam, then use its secondary fire (strong laser shot) to hit the bosses. As for upgrades, just prioritize the capacity so you can use it for longer – though keep in mind that you’ll run out of ammo quickly, and buying from the shop can be expensive.

Line gun

The Line Gun is somewhat similar to the Plasma Gun, but is much more focused on crowd control due to its wide attack. It will make quick work of the legs on a pack of standard Necromorphs or take out all three projectile-firing Tentacle Stalkers in one shot, so once you get this weapon you should keep it with you at all times. Since you need it to handle groups of enemies, prioritize the upgrade path that gives it extra capacity and damage.

Store these guns

These three weapons have situational uses and can be fun to use, but they just aren’t as versatile as the choices above. It’s probably better to keep them in your storage and only bring them out on rare occasions, if at all.

Force Gun

The Force Gun can be extremely powerful at extremely short range, making it a good choice if you just want to blast a bad guy or two. Unfortunately, if a larger group of enemies is close enough to you for such a situation, it’s often too late. But if you’re just really into the gun, it’s probably the best option on this list to replace one of the guns above – and it can just be a lot of fun to use. If you decide to upgrade it, pump up that damage as much as possible and go explosive.

Flamethrower

While the Flamethrower makes quick work of Swarmers – tiny little necromorphs that crawl around and slow you down – it’s not really worth taking up a weapon slot just for it when other weapons can handle them just fine. But if you do decide to wield a flamethrower, focus on upgrading its capacity so you can keep those creepy aliens on fire.

Ripper

The Ripper is found fairly early in the game, so it might come in handy during a few segments before getting a better weapon. However, once you’ve beefed up your arsenal a bit, this joke weapon is probably best left in storage. It can certainly be fun slicing and dicing with a saw blade, and some upgrades to its damage can help make it viable when paired with stalling during close encounters, but there are simply better options that can achieve the same results without limitations.
