The best movies and TV shows to watch after playing God of War Ragnarök

After the widely acclaimed success of developer Santa Monica Studio returns to the franchise with God of warfans have been counting down the days until the freshly released and equally acclaimed Ragnarök. Now that the game is out, countless are sure to continue this exciting soft-reboot adventure filled with cathartic action and the thoughtful character development of its redeemed protagonist.

However, for fans who leave hungry for more, there are several notable TV shows and movies to stream on Prime Video and Hulu after gaming in search of a Nordic-themed fix. Robert Eggers’ recent Viking epic is one such choice, and there’s also an ongoing anime series more than worth investing in for its interpretation of Norse lore.

Northerner (2022)

The latest great Nordic epic to hit theaters, Robert Eggers (Witch, Lighthouse) Northerner is pure, unfiltered Viking action. Starring Alexander Skarsgård, the story follows Viking prince Amleth as he embarks on a bloody quest for revenge after his uncle kills and usurps his father.

Northerner is a revenge story through and through, and there’s something admirable about the film being fully aware of what it is and using its strengths. Even more tantalizingly, the film and its interpretation of the world weave in some ambiguous elements of mysticism. As expected, Skarsgård gives an incredibly primal performance, and Anya Taylor-Joy makes an unforgettable impression as always in this second team-up with Eggers.

Northerner is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Vikings (2013-2020)

For serialized TV Viking action, aptly named Vikings is one of the best Nordic-themed shows to stream. A historical drama, this series is loosely based on real-world Scandinavian histories, namely through its main character Ragnar Lothbrok. It begins with Ragnar as a simple farmer who gradually rises to fame as a warrior, and the story takes the characters to England and beyond.

For lovers of history, medieval Nordic storytelling and meaningful dramatic intrigue, Vikings is an impressive epic spanning six narratively satisfying seasons. The series has been especially praised for giving equal importance to character writing as well as exciting action, which films and series with similar themes occasionally fail to do.

All six seasons Vikings are now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and Peacock.

Vinland Saga (2020-)

As for the anime, Wit Studio’s masterful adaptation of writer/artist Makoto Yukimura’s work Vinland Saga with Season 1 is a thoroughly engrossing watch for its story and fascinating cast of characters. This historical-fantasy anime follows young Thorfinn Karlsefni on his journey from bright-eyed boy to vengeful warrior after his father’s murder by the Viking mercenary Askeladd.

To get his revenge, he joins Askeladd’s mercenary group to gain the strength to kill him in a duel. On top of the compelling writing, the score is beautiful, the atmosphere is enchanting, and the story plays well with the themes of redemption, letting go of the past, and living for the future.

1st season Vinland Saga is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and HIDIVE, with a second season set to premiere on January 10, 2023.

The Last Kingdom (2015-2022)

Vikings is not the only critically acclaimed Nordic TV series available, as The last kingdom it deserved an equally strong reception. The series ended its 5th season this year, and praise has consistently gone towards its impressive overall production value.

It begins by following Uhtred, a man raised by a Danish Viking group who captured and killed his father, causing the character to develop an interesting internal conflict as he is eventually accepted as family. As with Vikings, The last kingdom it was also well received because it had as much focus on attractively written characters as it did on gritty, gory action.

All five seasons The last kingdom are now available to stream on Netflix, with a sequel film titled Seven kings must die premiering on the streamer in 2023 to wrap up the story.
