The best Pokémon Scarlet and Violet mods

It’s no secret that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet released in a technically messed up state. Many are willing to overlook flaws in performance, graphics, and quality of life features; however, others have taken it upon themselves to fix or improve aspects of the game that the developers cannot or do not want. Although modding is often associated with PC games, it is possible to do it on the Nintendo Switch. There are limitations and may be associated with certain risks, but these modifications can certainly make your journey through Paldea more enjoyable. Don’t expect a 4K, 60fps upgrade here, but these are the best Scarlet Pokemon and Violet mod out there.

How to Mod Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Modding on your Nintendo Switch isn’t as easy as it is on PC, but as long as you follow a few simple steps, anyone can do it. The Basics simply asks you to download the Trinity Mod Loader tool, download the mods you want and add them to the tool, then apply the mod to your Switch.

Please note that mods may result in a ban from Nintendo, so it is recommended that you play offline while using them. Even then, you do so at your own risk.

Pokemon ‘primitive’ randomizer

Wild Samurott in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet.

One thing that people like to do with their Pokemon titles is create a challenge race. Whether it’s Nuzlocke or, in this case, randomization, these simple tweaks can make an old game feel like new again. This mod allows you to select a number of options to change the way the game plays out, such as whether wild Pokemon will have stats similar to what you normally find there, whether Pokemon will have random items, whether legendary Pokemon and paradoxes can appear in overworld, grant Pokémon random abilities, and more.

Project Nebo

Although we don’t know why it’s called that, Project Sky is a great mod that gives you full control over your Pokémon’s stats, movements, and evolutions. This includes changing a Pokemon’s base stats, EVs, XP growth rate, abilities, type, owned items, and more. This is great if you need to start a new game but want to immediately go back to the final levels of the game or just make the game much easier or harder as a challenge. They will also add a trainer editor and randomizer at some point in the future.

Vulcain Custom Glosses

Three amazing Pokémon at a picnic.

The great Pokémon hunters are some of the most dedicated trainers. Hunting these rare Pokémon can be hard and time consuming, but very rewarding for the finishers. Unfortunately, not all of the Pokémon in the game have a shiny variant. Vulcain’s Custom Shinies mod gives you rarer mons to hunt by creating shiny new variants of the ones left out of this build. So far, the mod has created amazing versions of 67 other Pokemon that you can hunt.

Area Zero Remastering

Area Zero suffers just as much as the rest of Paldea in visual terms, but it hurts a bit more considering how special it was meant to be. This Area Zero Remaster can’t make the whole game look better, but it can at least improve this aspect. The highlights of this mod include the addition of a day/night cycle, all-new terrain textures, higher resolution, and improved textures. The modder is still working on additional features such as increasing the size of trees, adding weather, custom cave lighting, and more.

picnic+

Picnics are a new mechanic for crimson and Violet and they’re a fun new way to interact with your team, as well as eat delicious fan sandwiches. This simple Picnic+ mod simply improves every aspect of this mechanic. It will make power-ups more powerful, increase the size of the egg basket up to 50, and allow you to have a picnic almost anywhere you want.

No Pokemon Low Poly Models

One of the main complaints that trainers have is about the graphics. The Pokemon themselves are even a disappointment when you see them in the open world, even at close range. The No Low Poly Pokémon Models mod does exactly what it says on the tin and allows Pokémon to always load at the highest level of detail, no matter how far away you are from them. This mod can affect performance if there are a lot of Pokemon on the screen, so keep that in mind before installing it.

faster battles

After tens of hours and hundreds of battles, most trainers will get tired of how slow the fights can be. Previous games provided options to skip unnecessary pauses and animations, but not to crimson and Violet. While the Faster Battles mod can’t get everything you’d like out of battles, it can drastically speed them up. The mod gives you six options for how much you want to reduce the lag by speeding up the text, with the fastest cutting text frames almost completely.

Improved appearance of Pokémon Scarlet/Violet Reshade

Finally, for another graphical upgrade that this game is in dire need of, the Pokémon Scarlet/Violet Reshade Enhancer is a subtle but appreciated upgrade to the game’s appearance. This mod deals with color corrected lighting improvements, special effects fixes, corrected lighting conditions and more. It won’t make the game look like new, but it will make it look a little closer than it should.
