Survival in Fortnite and securing a Victory Royale requires skill and luck. all better in Fortnite it requires knowledge of the playing field and a desire to outlast your opponents, but none of that matters if you don’t choose the right weapon. Building teams that suit your playstyle and managing your inventory as the match progresses are keys to winning. You don’t want to get stuck in a ranged battle against someone on top of a mountain without a solid rifle to hand, and you certainly don’t want to find yourself in a closed building without an SMG or shotgun.

Fortnite Weapon selection varies from category to category, with many different weapons to choose from. From the Combat SMG to the Striker Burst Rifle, there’s something for every playstyle. Each weapon is also assigned a rank on the rarity scale. Whether you choose an SMG or an Assault Rifle, all weapons will be color coded:
- Grey: Common
- Green: uncommon
- Blue: rarely
- Purple: Epic
- Orange: Legendary
- Gold: Mythic
The rarer the weapon, the more damage it will do (usually). There are some exceptions to this, but if this is the case, the weapon likely has a higher rate of fire or another ability that still improves your overall damage per second (DPS). Keep this in mind when interacting with another player, especially during the later parts of the match. You probably won’t survive using a common rifle against a player using a rare rifle.
If at any point during the game you find a higher rarity level of the weapon you are currently using, be sure to change your current weapon and choose a better color. This allows you to make sure you increase your damage. Gray and green weapons are fine at the start of a match, but you should at least have blue by the time half of the players have been knocked out.
Choosing between weapon types is more difficult. It might not be a good idea to swap out a regular assault rifle for an epic pistol if you know you’ll be covering open ground. If you have to make that decision, think about where you plan to go next and which weapon best suits the terrain. Not handy with a sniper rifle? Don’t waste inventory space leveling it up, even if it’s legendary.
The best weapons in Fortnite during Chapter 4 Season 2
Although simply running into any weapon is better than running Fortnite swinging a pickaxe wildly, there are some firearms that are better than others. For example, you really should expect to run into an SMG over a pistol. You’ll also need an assault rifle or sniper for those long-range fights. The general rule of thumb is to make sure you have a weapon for every situation, from close range to medium range and beyond.

kinetic blade
The new Kinetic Blade is practically necessary if you want to rack up wins, but not for the reasons you might think. While the weapon itself is decent and does 60 damage per hit (which can be enough to end a lot of close range fights), the main reason to use the Kinetic Blade is its move.
You can use the kinetic blade to quickly move around the map and even throw it at unsuspecting opponents. It is similar to Nimbus Cloud from previous seasons in that it allows you to move around the map very quickly. For this reason, it is an essential part of the weapon meta during Chapter 4, Season 2.
DMR charges
Fittingly, the Cobra DMR is a variation on the standard DMR, excelling in long-range encounters with the ability to take down opponents in just a few shots. This is the perfect long-range weapon, offering the qualities of a sniper without many of the drawbacks. With the Cobra DMR, you can zoom in at high magnification, and thanks to its semi-automatic shutter release style, you can shoot follow-up shots in rapid succession. The Cobra DMR has more ammo and fires faster than a standard DMR, making it much lighter.
While the DMR doesn’t deal as much damage as the sniper, it is much easier to use thanks to its fast rate of fire. Depending on the rarity and if you hit the head, Cobra DMR deals between 36 and 69 damage per hit, which means you can take out a player (at full health on them) in four to seven hits. This is a big deal, especially if you can get a few shots in before your opponents realize where you are, making it a great long-range weapon. Sure, other rifles might be a bit easier to use, but when it comes to power and accuracy, the Cobra DMR is the ultimate winner.
The Cobra DMR was removed in Chapter 3, but returned during Chapter 4, Season 2 as a non-vaulted weapon.
Looted Blink Mag SMG
The Heisted Blink Mag SMG is the best option, but hard to come by. This is essentially a version of the Twin Mag SMG, but in exotic form. You get it by defeating the Double Agent Hush boss found in Mega City. The reason it is so effective is because it deals 21 damage per shot and has an extremely high rate of fire which means its total DPS is around 273. If you headshot you will deal around 31 damage. Another factor to consider is that the Heisted Blink Mag SMG is hitscan, which means you won’t need to aim your shots with it. It’s great for short and medium range battles, which means it’s an essential part of your team.
Havoc Pump Shotgun
Speaking of short range, we highly recommend the Havoc Pump Shotgun for those fights within 10 meters or so. This weapon unsurprisingly hits hard, dealing 108 to 144 damage based on rarity. However, the mythic version can deal up to 250 damage, which means it can take down an opponent in one hit. Despite its power, it is quite unforgiving if you miss with it, as its fire rate and reload speed are very slow. With that in mind, we suggest that you only use it within that 10 meter range, as you will be at a disadvantage outside of that.
Havoc Suppressed Assault Rifle
Finally, you’ll need an assault rifle for those medium to large battles, and none beats the Havoc Suppressed Assault Rifle. This is a very accurate rapid fire assault rifle that is powerful. It deals 21 to 37 damage per hit, depending on rarity and if you hit the head, which means it will take seven to 12 hits to take down an enemy with full plates. Given its rapid fire, this means that you can take down your enemies extremely quickly, as long as you can control the weapon. We recommend using it between 25 and 40 meters.

While Assault Rifles aren’t the most powerful weapon set in the game, they are the most versatile. You have several variants with different types of stopping power. It won’t take out enemies from all over the map, but it’s easily covered whether you need to make a quick escape to safety or run for your Victory Royale with five people in your path. Just make sure you shoot in short bursts and you’ll be golden.

Shotguns aren’t great at range, of course, but if someone’s up close, you can rock their world with a devastating shotgun blast. They are the perfect complement to your assault rifle. Some are significantly better than others, so play around to find the one that works best for you. You will find different categories of shotguns to choose from in the form of pump-action shotguns, tactical shotguns, and lever-action shotguns. The Tactical Shotgun is currently the best option for players looking for a high rate of fire.

SMG
While not as powerful or direct as assault rifles or shotguns, SMGs are still preferable in combat when you need something fast and light to take out the competition. They’re automatic, so you can hold the trigger in a panic, and they’ll hold plenty of ammo.
They won’t do as much damage as assault rifles or shotguns, but they’re like little firecrackers that can still throw a real party when people try to mess with you. Many players underestimate the SMG, but it can absolutely destroy a shotgun player at close range, especially if you take advantage of that weapon’s fire delay and frequent reload time.

Let’s face it: not everyone can excel as a sniper. But if all you can find is a sniper rifle, use it wisely. These weapons can one-shot anyone in your path with a well-placed headshot.

Explosives and special weapons
As part of Chapter 4 Season 2, there aren’t a lot of explosives and special weapons to choose from, at least the ones that are practical or common. In recent seasons, special weapons have tended to be overpowered, fake, or not as useful as you’d expect. Epic Games prioritized creating a more diverse and effective group of traditional weapons, such as SMGs, assault rifles, snipers, and shotguns. However, this season offers the Grapple Glove, which is a useful method of moving around the map.
