Boogeyman focuses on the Harper family: Will Harper (Based on a true story‘s Chris Messina), father and at-home therapist; Sadie Harper’s teenage daughter (Yellow vests‘ Sophie Thatcher) and pre-teen younger sister Sawyer Harper (Obi-Wan Kenobi’with Vivien Lyra Blair). All three live in a spacious house somewhere in California and all three are still recovering from the recent death of their wife and mother Cara in a car accident.

One day, while the children are at school, a strange man enters the Harper household while the children are at school and demands that Will see him. Will reluctantly agrees, and the man tells his story. His name is Lester Billings (Suicide SquadDavid Dastmalchian), was once happily married with three children. One day his child dies of SIDS. Grief-stricken, the family endures one trauma after another when both remaining children die under mysterious circumstances. Lester came to believe that his family had been put on the line by a demonic creature, the literal Boogeyman.

After being reassured by Will, Lester sneaks out and wanders upstairs. Just then, Sadie comes home and hears strange noises coming from her mother’s empty art studio. She investigates and finds Lester’s dead body hanging from the back of a closet door.

The Boogeyman’s Origins

After the body is taken away by the police and the family returns to their home, strange sounds/sights occur. At first, only Sawyer experiences these phenomena. Eventually, Sadie believes her younger sister’s claims that there is a Boogeyman walking around the house, shrouded in shadows as his only apparent weakness is bright light. Sadie begins to investigate why the Boogeyman is there by going back to the source: Lester.

She finds his home address and breaks into his seemingly abandoned home, where she meets the last survivor, wife and mother Rita. Now armed with a shotgun and half out of her mind, Rita explains why the Boogeyman stalked her family, and now Sadie: he’s drawn to trauma. Just as her family mourned the loss of a child, Sawyer’s grief for her dead mother is like catnip to a supernatural creature.

Sadie returns home and tries to tell her father the truth, but he doesn’t listen. He tells her to go down to the basement and get rid of some of her mother’s things that are packed in boxes. She goes down to the dark basement, finds the lighter that belonged to her mother and lights it to see. She asks out loud if her mother is looking at her. As a test, he asks his mother to move the flame of the lighter to the left. The flame does not move.

Later, the Boogeyman attacks again, nearly killing Sawyer and sending her to the hospital. This prompts Sadie to return to the Lester household, where Rita ties Sadie up to lure the Boogeyman into a trap. She appears to be successful as the creature is seemingly shot by Rita. However, it is a ruse, and the creature attacks Rita, causing her to shoot Sadie and free her, only to be killed by the creature as well. Sadie runs home, but not before we see Will and Sawyer return home first, where they are promptly captured by the Bogeyman.

How does The Boogeyman end?

Sadie finds Sawyer hiding in a closet with Christmas lights wrapped around her, which temporarily keeps the Boogeyman at bay. They descend into the dark basement, where their father is imprisoned. The sisters lure the creature and fight it individually, causing a can of gasoline to spill on the floor. Sawyer is knocked unconscious and the creature straddles Sadie, opening its mouth in an attempt to eat her.

Sawyer wakes up and throws some gasoline on the creature to help her sister. Sadie lights the lighter she had from before, and this time the flame moves to the left, signifying that her mother is with her in spirit. The creature is now burning with flames that quickly spread throughout the house. The daughters gather their wounded father and run outside, watching the Boogeyman burn to ashes along with their home.

The film quickly cuts to daytime, with Will, Sawyer and Sadie finishing up counseling with a family therapist. They are finally ready to talk about the trauma of losing a loved one, which is why The Boogeyman stalked them in the first place. Just as they left, Sadie thought she heard a noise from the open closet. He approaches them and, deciding that he does not want to return to the past, closes the door, literally and symbolically.

Boogeyman now playing in theaters across the country.
