Globally, it is clear that daily CO2 emissions fell by 17% during the peak of the restrictions (April 7). Emissions from land transport account for almost half of this decline (43%), electricity production 19%, industry 25% and air 10%.

In France, the maximum emission reduction of less than 34% was achieved on March 20 and remained at that level until the end of April, our colleagues report.

However, the authors of the study believe that this stagnation is not sustainable to the extent that it is not related to socio-economic structural transformations and that these reductions in the extremes are probably temporary.

“The fall in emissions is significant, but it illustrates the challenge of meeting our obligations under the Paris Agreement. We need systemic change, made possible by green energy and electric cars, not temporary reductions due to imposed behavior,” says Parisian-Rob Jackson, co-author of the study and professor at Stanford University in the United States.
For the international consortium of scientists leading up to this study, only policy decisions made by governments during the post-Covid-19 recovery, in favor of or against the fight against global warming, will bring about real, sustainable change in the years to come.
