The draft decree plans to extend these prohibitions from July 1, 2022 “in all places of life outside the country of elite sport.”

The Department for Environmental Transition announced on Thursday its desire to extend from July 2022 the ban on the use of pesticides in habitable spaces, such as gardens, apartments, parks or private campsites.

Already in 2017, the law prohibited the use of phytosanitary chemical products by communities for the maintenance of green areas and roads. The same prohibition as of January 2019 for individuals and hobby gardeners who may only use products of natural origin.

The draft decree considered on Thursday, until August 16, plans to extend these prohibitions (excluding biocontrol) from July 1, 2022 “in all places of life outside the country of elite sports”.

This applies to jointly owned gardens, hotels, motels, campgrounds, amusement parks, commercial areas, green areas in workplaces, educational institutions, health institutions, some sports facilities (tracks, athletic tracks, fields, tennis courts, golf courses, etc.) and cemeteries.

Until now, cemeteries were officially exempt from the law, except for those deemed to have a place to walk because, for example, they contain the graves of celebrities, according to the official Ecophyto-pro website.

There is no other alternative than to use high-level sports facilities

For sports equipment, an exemption is foreseen until January 1, 2025 for those “high levels” for which “no technical solution reaches the required quality during official competitions.”

The draft regulation does not apply to the SNCF, a large user of phytosanitary products for clearing brush on its roads and in its immediate surroundings.
