New operation for Ocean Viking: 47 migrants adrift in the Mediterranean Sea were rescued this Tuesday south of the Italian island of Lampedusa by a humanitarian ship, which an AFP journalist found on board, bringing the number of people picked up on board to more than 160 in five days.

As in the two operations carried out last Thursday by the SOS Mediteran ambulance ship, these 47 people were crowded into a wooden boat equipped with a handmade motor. They were positioned up to “30 nautical miles (about 55 kilometers) south of Lampedusa in international waters under the responsibility of Malta,” SOS Mediterranean, which chartered the ship, told AFP.

118 migrants rescued in the last week

They are mostly citizens of Bangladesh, South Sudan, Pakistan or Ghana, according to the non-governmental organization. According to the first materials collected by AFP, these migrants fleeing Libya spent three days and three nights at sea, before a ship sailing under the Norwegian flag intervened.

Last Thursday, after resuming its activities after a three-month hiatus related to the health crisis, Ocean Viking provided assistance to 118 migrants who were also fleeing Libya in two boats. On the night of Monday to Tuesday, one of them, who was immediately quarantined due to the Covid-19 disease, was approved for medical evacuation on an Italian coast guard ship.
