The most common Google Home problems, and how to fix them

Designed to help you control the various smart devices and Google services in your life, the Google Nest smart speakers work much like Amazon’s Echo speakers — except, you know, for Google stuff. While the Google Nest along with the associated Google Home app is a promising voice assistant, things don’t always go as planned. That’s why we’ve put together a list of some of the most common home speaker problems, along with some tips on how to get things working right.

Is Google Home being discontinued?

Google Home devices have been renamed Nest, and the original Google Home speaker is now far out of date. However, the Google Home app is still alive and well, and the hub is used to control all compatible smart devices. These tips should also work with Nest models.

I can’t keep Google Home connected to my Wi-Fi network

A known issue with some Google Home devices, it happens even if the user places it directly next to a router or antenna. The home may not connect to the network correctly or may not maintain a reliable connection.

Solution:

  • Try restarting your device. To do this, launch the Google Home app on the connected device and select Devices in the upper right corner. Select your home device, tap the three dots in the upper right corner, then select settings. Then choose More before tapping System reboot. If this sounds like a lot of work, turn off your home device and leave it turned off for about a minute before turning it back on and reconnecting.
  • If restarting Home several times still results in a disconnection, we suggest you contact Google Support and ask if there is something wrong with your connection or router. Google offers great support options for Home and may be able to help.

Google Home ignores me and doesn’t respond to my voice

Solution:

  • Check and make sure Home’s microphone is turned on — after all, it could have been accidentally turned off. It also helps to check the indicator light located on the speaker; four lights mean the microphone is off. Turning the microphone back on is done using the button on the back of the speaker.
  • If the speaker is on but still not responding, check the physical location of the device. Is there a possibility of noise disturbance? Dishwashers, air vents and a host of other noise sources can prevent the Home from hearing users properly. If so, try moving it to a quieter area and see if it works better.
  • Google Home recently learned to recognize multiple users. To take advantage, open the Google Home app, select the tab that says Multi-user is available. (If you don’t see it, tap the icon in the upper right corner to see all your connected services.) Press Link your account, then repeat short phrases like “OK Google” and “Hey Google” to teach it to recognize your voice. Repeat as many times as needed for up to six different accounts.
  • Is the problem only happening on certain devices, like Google Home refusing to turn on your lights? Enter the Home app and check if your smart device is still present in the app and working. If it is, try turning off your smart device completely and then pairing it with Google Home again. It should now respond to your voice commands.

My voice commands also include my Google phone, laptop, and other devices

Solution:

  • It’s certainly annoying to start controlling the phone instead of the Home device or both at the same time. There’s not much you can do to avoid it. However, we suggest changing the activation phrase or “hotword” for both devices. The default phrase “OK, Google” prompts Home and other Google devices to listen. Although you can change the phone or browser phrase, “OK, Google” is the only Home prompt.
  • To change the “hot word”, go to the device and install the Open Mic+ extension, which adds the ability to change the phrase from “OK Google”. Now you can set it to something like “OK, Jarvis” or “Hey, Jeeves.”

Google Play Music will start playing music and then suddenly stop

Solution:

  • This is a known problem not only with Google’s proprietary service, but also with streaming platforms like Spotify.
  • After making sure Home is updated, it’s best to restart your device and see if the music plays properly. Select in the application Home device, tap three dots in the upper right corner, then select settings. On settings page, select More, and tap System reboot. If this sounds like a lot of work, simply turn off Home and leave it turned off for about a minute before turning it back on and reconnecting. However, this option is not a guaranteed solution and may not work forever. Google seems to be actively addressing this issue and will likely fix it in future updates.

I ask my home, but it rarely knows anything

Solution:

  • Try turning Home off, wait a minute, and turn it back on. It may also require a reboot to run.
  • If that doesn’t work, double-check that the home page is linking to a Google Account with location turned on. Additionally, make sure your Google Account can answer questions about calendars, flights, and other items selected during the initial setup process.
  • Try setting up voice match as this helps Google better understand your voice commands. Also, try to rephrase your question as Google Home usually understands direct questions better than long or drawn-out queries.

Google does not recognize the exact location for my home

The solution

  • This presents a problem while searching for nearby services, weather reports, and other location-based items. Providing your home address can make a difference because it tells the app your exact location.
  • To add this detail, open Home application After that, select the top left button to access additional settings. choose More optionsto go Google account settingsand select Personal informations. Then choose Home and work locations. Simply enter the address here to see if it can locate the home.

My Home responds randomly, even though no one has spoken to it

Solution:

  • Try to move it away from TV, radio and other sources of vibration. Place it on a firmer surface and see if it helps. Home devices have been known to talk randomly, even if someone hasn’t actually activated them. Do not be afraid; The home isn’t haunted – it’s just a little over the top.

My Google device just says something is wrong and “try again in a few minutes”

Solution:

  • This issue is likely the result of the site’s network connectivity level. The home is trying to connect to the Internet, but it is either not responding or takes a long time (which is not normal). If you find that you have other smart devices in your home that aren’t working well, double check that your internet is working before completely rebooting your router.
  • If you find that the Internet is working properly on other devices, we suggest you try restarting the Home device itself. We recommend a full reboot, which will require you to turn off your device and wait about a minute before turning it back on. If you’re still having trouble for some reason, contact Google Support and describe your dilemma in detail. Realizing that this may require diving into specific IP data, it’s always a good idea to ask for help at this point.

Home does not play music or suddenly stops playing music

Solution:

  • Make sure the volume is turned up. You can turn up the volume at any time by saying, “OK, Google, turn it up.” Some Home and Nest devices also have built-in controls that you can use to change the volume (and which may have been accidentally used to turn it down).
  • Restart the speaker and see if it plays music properly after that.
  • Sometimes home devices encounter errors that prevent them from playing music properly, especially from certain channels. Go to the Home app and make sure all updates have been applied to the Home device to see if that fixes the problem.
  • If you have a new Nest device, you need to connect third-party services like Spotify before they start playing. Connecting is relatively easy, and you can do it in your account settings in the Home app.

The Google Home app can’t find the new Nest device

Solution:

  • Make sure you have updated the Google Home app on your device. Apps are not always updated automatically and it is important to have the latest version.
  • Make sure your device is in setup mode, indicated by the flashing white LEDs.
  • Stay close to your new device, at least within a few feet, while connecting.
  • Make sure location services are enabled for the Home app on your device. Sometimes the Home app needs this during setup (you can usually disable it later if you want).
  • Try moving your Nest device to another location. There could be interference or other problems with the current location.
  • On your mobile device, turn off Wi-Fi and perform a complete shutdown. Turn your device back on and re-enable Wi-Fi, then try again.

The Google Home app is frozen

Solution:

  • Restart the device with the Home app. This will often resolve app freezing issues.
  • If the app continues to freeze, delete it and then download it again from your app store.
  • If you’re on an Android device, you can go to the app’s settings and select Google Home to find the option to clear the app’s cache. This action can prevent frequent application freezes or crashes.
