The Owl House: 5 Reasons We Love Luz (& 5 We Love Amity)

Dana Terrace Owl Houserecently concluded its premiere season on Disney Channel, introducing viewers to Luz Noceda, a 14-year-old girl with a fierce passion for fantasy, especially surrounding a girl named Azura. Fictional episode of The Witch. Luz (Sarah-Nicole Robles) accidentally finds herself transported to another dimension called the Boiling Islands, where she is attacked by the most powerful witch in the dimension, Ada Crowthorne (Wendy Malik).

Also introduced is Amity Blight (Mae Whitman, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” fame), the ambitious perfectionist Luz met at Huxside Academy, where he trained under Ada’s sister Lilith. Amity is initially hostile to Luz and her friends, but under Luz’s influence, Amity slowly begins to shed her mean-girl appearance and grows into a warmer person.

Luz: she’s very creative

Luz’s creativity is constantly emphasized throughout the series. She is fascinated by the Azura collection and loves expressing herself creatively. In one episode, she enters King’s writing contest and is able to write a novel.

The way she uses magic is also a great example of Luz’s creativity. Magic didn’t come naturally to her like Ada, Amity, or the others. Instead, Luz learned to harness magic through the use of runes, which she used to conjure magic.

Friendly: she is ambitious

When viewers are first introduced to Amity, she is a top student at Huxside Academy and is very proud of it. She clearly thinks she’s above the rest of the class and is desperate to stay on top – even going to great lengths to try to reveal that Willow’s abomination is actually Luz.

Additionally, Amity’s goal is to eventually join the Emperor’s Coven. She adores Lilith (she has a poster of Lilith in her bedroom) and is deeply disappointed and ashamed when Lilith uses her to cheat.

Luz: she’s romantic

Luz romanticizes magic multiple times on the show, having grown up on fantasy novels full of quests and choices, and at the beginning of the series Luz wishes her life in the Boiling Isles was more like one of her books life.

However, Luz has also been shown to enjoy the romance. Much to King’s dismay, the original outline for her novel was quite romantic. One element of this is a loyal knight who falls in love with Luz, and her fairytale dance with Amity in Grom, as she is lured into a trap on an illusory mission. This side of Luz is refreshing because it’s not something that’s made fun of – a rarity in cartoons.

Friendly: Caring

Although it’s not obvious, Amity is a very caring person. Luz initially thought Amity was just a mean girl until she found Amity reading to children in the library, an activity Amity seemed to really enjoy as she was very active in the environment.

Over time, Amity’s warmer attitude manifested itself in many other ways: She quit her school sports team after accidentally injuring a teammate; when she realized Luz was in trouble, she pushed Willow and Gus Help Luz win a game.

Luz: she’s brave

Due to the nature of the Boiling Islands and Luz’s helpful nature, she is inevitably thrown into a dangerous orgy in each episode. One of the cores of Lutz’s character is her love of helping others, usually by diving headlong into danger and trying to put things right.

A great example of her bravery is in the season finale when she faces off against series villain Emperor Belos while trying to save Ada from being mistakenly petrified. Bellos gives Lutz an ultimatum: She can save Ada if she gives him the door to the human world. Luz managed to trick him and destroy the portal – the only way to get back to her mother.

Friendly: She’s a nerd

She may not be as nerdy as Luz, who proudly writes fan fiction and cosplays Azula in one episode, but Amity is just as big a fan of the Azula book series as Luz.

Some of Amity’s actions are modeled after Azula’s, and she even drew her own fan art using one of the closely guarded characters in her diary. She also agreed to start a private book club with Luz to discuss the series.

Luz: She’s optimistic

By far Luz’s most notable trait is her optimism. She is passionate and will move forward in anything she encounters: whether it’s magical training, writing a book with Jin, or offering to face Grom in Amity’s place.

Despite the trials Luz faces, her upbeat personality never wavers. She expects the good guys to win because that’s what she knows best from fantasy. She is the first to offer moral support and advancement to her friends, and is able to see the best in everyone.

Friendly: She strives to make things right

Amity is initially hostile towards Willow, belittling and mocking her. She continued to do this for a while, but it became more and more half-hearted, until it was finally revealed that Amity and Willow were childhood friends after Amity accidentally destroyed some of Willow’s memories.

Amity finally opens up to Willow and explains that she kicked Willow away because her parents forced her to so that Willow would have a chance at Huxside. After the girls reconciled, Amity cut ties with the mean kids at school and defended Willow when she tried to mock her.

luz: she’s warm

So far, throughout Owl House Among the cast, Luz is the warmest character in the show. She is energetic, friendly, and lovely. Her favorite thing is helping others, and she easily makes friends on Boiling Island.

Luz’s personality endears her to most of her friends: while they find Luz often difficult for her to understand, they appreciate her positive energy and are always there for her in times of need.

Friendly: She is protective

For those whom Amity cares about, she will spare no effort to protect them. When her parents threaten to interfere with Willow’s education, Amity does everything in her power to protect Willow, even if it means destroying their friendship.

When Luz flees from Grom, Amity follows in an attempt to save Luz. In the previous episode, Amity also risked fighting the giant beast alone to save her siblings.
