The RTX 4070 may get a big price cut — but there’s a catch

Nvidia’s RTX 4070 graphics card has just been released, but it could already be set for a price drop. That’s according to tech website Igor’s Lab, though the outlet notes there’s a major catch that could throw things into question.

According to Igor’s lab, Nvidia may be planning to offer third-party GPU manufacturers a $50 rebate for every chip order they place with Nvidia. It’s interesting news to hear so soon after the RTX 4070 hit the shelves.

That rebate could see the RTX 4070 drop below its $600 starting price. That would be a welcome relief for many gamers who have had their eye on some of the best GPUs out there, but are hesitant to pull the trigger on the RTX 4070 due to at its high price.

Of course, GPU manufacturers can simply put $50 on each card to give themselves a little more financial leeway. Igor’s Lab notes that profit margins are very slim for many card makers, who face “almost no financial freedom” in their products.

However, Nvidia’s 40-series GPUs are hardly coming off the shelves, partly due to the glut of 30-series cards still flooding the market. That low demand could encourage third-party card makers to pass on the $50 savings to customers, which means it could be a good time to buy a GPU.

Price cuts get in the way

However, there are some complications. First, the RTX 4060 Ti is expected in May, and the RTX 4070 price drop could cannibalize sales of Nvidia’s next graphics card.

Another annoyance is that Nvidia doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to offer a refund, preferring to see what arch-rival AMD does when it launches its RX 7800 and RX 7700 cards this summer. If AMD’s cards are surprisingly low in price, Nvidia may be tempted to come up with its own repayment plan. If not, the Green Team may feel less pressure to lower prices.

All of this makes for frustrating news for potential Nvidia 40-series buyers. While a $50 rebate would certainly be welcome news for gamers already under pressure from high prices and economic uncertainty, waiting for confirmation from whether it will actually happen is certainly upsetting. Ultimately, we will have to wait and see what happens, and cross our fingers that the price turns down sooner rather than later.
