Despite their brief success, Meng and his love Alinora are eventually able to fight back and defeat the gods. From their bones Dream created the Horns and the Gate of Ivory and shaped his infamous helmet.
Although sandman Dream experienced a bout with the invading gods, and he was able to come out on the other side with a powerful reminder of his experience. However, “Dream” seems destined to repeat history in a very ironic way. Though his helmet symbolizes constant vigilance, Morpheus finds himself imprisoned once again, this time on an even more devastating scale.
Morpheus is the first to admit that he was unprepared when he failed to keep the dream safe, and his kingdom was stolen as punishment. Being in such a position is inappropriate for the Dream Sandman, and when Dream is set free, he grips his helmet tightly to remind himself that just because he’s powerful doesn’t mean he won’t be brought down by dastardly foes . Despite Morpheus’ constant reminders of his colossal failure, he still managed to capture Burgess. Unlike his first incarceration, his absence for nearly a century led to some of the worst problems Dreamers has ever faced.
Sandman may have succeeded in crafting a visually impressive helmet, but he failed to use it as the intended cautionary artifact.
