The world’s longest race track will soon be outside Las Vegas

It sounds like something out of a James Bond novel, but it’s all true. It turns out that a madman is building the world’s largest racetrack in the middle of the desert west of Las Vegas. It even has a jetpack.

But it’s no secret lair, and it’s quickly becoming a playground for the world’s richest racing fans. Spring Mountain Motor Resort & Country Club is the brainchild of multimillionaire entrepreneur John Morris, an iconoclast in the mold of peers like Richard Branson or Elon Musk. He bought the growing Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch racetrack in 2004 and recently paid $5 million for the property next door to pursue an ambitious plan: build the longest professional racetrack in the world.

The longest race track in the world is currently the legendary 13.1 mile Nürburgring Grand Prix race track in Nürburg, Germany near the Belgian border. John Morris intends to expand the racetrack at Spring Mountain to more than 15 miles. But that’s just the beginning. Morris also plans a 6-mile off-road desert track for trucks and all-terrain vehicles and a high-performance go-kart race track, as well as a 6,000-foot race track that will double as an airplane runway.

In addition, the mogul is building a community of luxury homes, hotels, restaurants, theaters and car washes, all to provide a friendly haven for racing fans. It’s even a bit futuristic — nearby Lake Spring Mountain has a destination called Jetpack America, which offers travelers and residents the ultimate flying experience with the world’s first water jetpacks. (Fun fact: There’s a video online showing Morris landing unexpectedly in a lake. Google “Jetpack Fail.” We’ll wait).

There are also two very exclusive driving schools on the property. Professional racing car champion Ron Fellows has brought his performance driving school to Spring Mountain, featuring state-of-the-art Corvettes and other high-performance vehicles. Another brand that graces the racetrack is the Cadillac V-Series Performance Academy, which offers an exclusive opportunity to test drive the company’s CTS-V and ATS-V models; the company even offers free registration, airfare and a two-day resort stay with every vehicle purchased.

But hotel rooms and trail time aren’t the only way Spring Mountain generates revenue. Morris also sells property, finished homes and race cars and leases the track to manufacturers and race teams for testing and practice.

But it’s not cheap. Spring Mountain membership reportedly costs $45,000 for membership and $5,000 in annual dues, none of which faze Spring Mountain’s clientele at all. At least one member bought eight cars and a house the day he became a member. It’s a community like no other, as Morris recently told Bloomberg.

“We’re going to end up with our own city and we can do whatever we want,” Morris said.
