Nothing says summer like a barbecue in the garden, on a large terrace or at a campsite. There are plenty of grills and grills packed with clever technology to help you master this favorite summer pastime, but the only tool you really need to deliver perfectly cooked food is a meat thermometer. Of course, you can use the old palm trick, where you press the hill of Venus into your palm with two fingers, and do the same with the meat. Somewhere in that translation, meat must be cooked to perfection. A more technical approach is to use something like the ThermoPro TP25 500FT Bluetooth Meat Thermometer with 4 Probes.

Anyone can see the temperatures

The ThermoPro thermometer can measure the temperature of four different foods at the same time. It comes with four color-coded probes to measure the temperature of what you’re cooking. One side of the probe plugs into the corresponding colored port on the unit and the other goes into the meat. The temperature then appears in the corresponding box on the ThermoPro display. This information also corresponds to the information you will find on your phone in the ThermoPro BBQ app.

Let’s get ahead of ourselves. Setting up the thermometer is simple and fast. The only thing that takes real time is charging the thermometer, which is done with the included micro-USB to USB charger. While it’s charging, it’s a good time to download the ThermoPro BBQ app from the iOS or Android store. It’s easy to search the app store or scan the QR code on the back of the unit. After installation, make sure Bluetooth is turned on on your phone, press the Bluetooth button on the back of the device and you’ll be connected almost instantly. We were all impressed with the smoothness of the entire experience.

The thermometer itself has a backlit display (which you can turn on and off), so you can still see what’s going on in the dark. There’s also a metal hook on the back of the screen, so you can easily attach it to a grill handle, or use the two included probe clips to attach it to a nearby pole.

A pretty smart cooking app

Most people who know me know that I’m not always a fan of the right cooking app. In these cases, it’s usually because the app feels like an unnecessary plugin. The ThermoPro TP25 BBQ app is a lesson in what one of these apps should do, and it does it well. We already mentioned the simple setup, but it’s also extremely intuitive to use, and is especially useful for people who know next to nothing about grilling, as well as those who do, which is no small feat.

It is especially useful for people who know next to nothing about grilling.

Color-coded probes aren’t just for a simple connection to the thermometer. They also correspond to the app where you choose what that probe measures. The app has all the USDA-approved preset temperatures for poultry, beef, veal, pork, ham, fish, lamb, and turkey. Where applicable, it also offers options for rare, medium, medium, medium well, and well done. After inserting the probes, select what you are cooking and the level of doneness in the app. If you’re a professional griller, you can also create profiles to set your own temperature and the room temperature to keep your grill, oven, or smoker within a certain range.

When the food you are cooking comes within range, it will alert you with a pre-temperature alarm in case you need to do any preparation to remove the meat. The phone app also has an alarm (which you can turn on/off) that sounds when the meat is done. If the phone and the thermometer are going to be close to each other, we recommend that you silence the alarm on the phone because the thermometer has one too. It gets a bit chaotic if they both get close. Even if you turn off the alarm on your phone, you will still receive a notification on your phone.

What’s for dinner? All!

Testing the ThermoPro TP25 was more fun than expected. To test the TP25, we decided to cook a variety of proteins on the Hibachi grill, since it’s one of the more uneven cooking surfaces. Much depends on the heat of the coals and the position of the meat. We got salmon empanadas, steaks, pork chops, and chicken kabobs and invited our favorite steakhouses to see what they thought of the process.

ThermoPro claims a 500 foot range, and it really does!

We put the food on the grill and do not insert the probes until we turn the meat. At that moment we were able to identify in the application what we were cooking and the degree of roasting. First, we were impressed that the temperature on the ThermoPro and the app were in sync, which hasn’t always been the case with meat thermometers we’ve tested in the past. We appreciated that the temperatures were different for everything we cooked. Finally, the device announces that it maintains your Bluetooth connection up to 500 feet, which it did. One of the problems with testing Bluetooth connected devices and apps is distance: the phone goes out of range and the connection is lost. We are happy to report that this did not happen.

The only problem we had with the thermometer was with the probes. The probes are metal, so when you remove them from the meat, they are extremely hot to the touch. To be fair, the big warning label on the probe says, “Always remove probes with gloves on.” Another challenge we faced was that monitoring the temperature of four different elements on a small hibachi grill became a bit tricky: it was easy to get the probes tangled up together, although each one has a plastic winder to prevent this situation. We hope this won’t be a big problem with a larger cooking surface or smokehouses.

At the end, when we served the food, one of our guests said he was “surprised” and thought the meat was perfectly cooked. He impressed us with how easy it was to use and how he cooked everything to perfection, something we’ve always found challenging. I especially enjoyed looking at meat that didn’t have many cuts to see if it was “done”.

Our opinion

We were impressed with the ThermoPro TP25 and the corresponding roasting app – both did what they were supposed to do and did it well. We were impressed with how easy it was to use and it was our first experience grilling where the meat was cooked perfectly on the first try. Four probes is probably more than most people will use, but again, you don’t have to use all of them every time. In this way, we appreciate the flexibility that the unit provides. People who smoke meat and do a lot of grilling will probably benefit the most from this, and it’s a fairly inexpensive way to turn your grill into a smart grill.

Is there a better alternative?

There is a wide variety of Wi-Fi meat thermometers out there, and the Meater Plus is usually at the top of that list. That model is in the same price range, but it can only handle one piece of meat at a time and is probably better suited for the stovetop. There’s also the Inkbird IBT-4XC, which also has four probes, costs a bit less, but doesn’t quite have the range.

How long will it last?

A meat thermometer should last at least a few years if you take care of it, which means you should check and recalibrate it every six months to make sure it’s working properly.

Should I buy it?

At $60, it’s a bit more expensive than your average thermometer, but it’s also not the most expensive Bluetooth meat thermometer. You get four thermometers in one, so it’s a deal if you think of it that way. This model is a great choice if you’re looking for a gift for the grill master in your life. Worth every penny if you want to take the guesswork out of grilling. No one has been “wowed” by my grilling capabilities before.
