These are the countries where ChatGPT is currently banned

While some countries are rushing to take advantage of ChatGPT and similar artificial intelligence (AI) tools, other countries are heavily reliant on regulations, and still others have banned their use altogether. While the effectiveness of such bans could be questioned, here are some of the countries that have already banned ChatGPT.

Which countries have banned ChatGPT?

As of this writing, there are seven countries where ChatGPT is effectively banned by their governments and ruling parties. The list includes:

  • Russia
  • Porcelain
  • North Korea
  • Cuba
  • Iran
  • Syria
  • Italy

Some of these countries have banned the app due to privacy concerns, while others, notably North Korea, China, and Russia, have claimed that the US will use ChatGPT to spread disinformation.

In which countries has Open AI banned ChatGPT?

In addition to the nationwide bans, ChatGPT developer OpenAI also blocked the use of ChatGPT in certain countries. At the time of writing, that list includes:

  • Russia
  • Porcelain
  • North Korea
  • Cuba
  • Iran
  • Syria
  • Italy

OpenAI has also previously banned Ukraine from using ChatGPT due to its inability to specifically block Crimea, which is currently under Russian occupation. However, that ban has since been lifted and Ukraine can now access ChatGPT.

OpenAI maintains a list of countries that are allowed to use its API, which you can find here. However, this list is not exhaustive, so due to omissions, blocks or bans, the following countries are also not allowed to use ChatGPT:

  • Afghanistan
  • Butane
  • Central African Republic
  • Chad
  • eritrea
  • swatini
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • South Sudan
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Yemen

Why is ChatGPT banned in Italy?

Italy was the first Western and European country to ban ChatGPT, which raises the question of whether other Western countries will implement more bans. It was banned after the country’s data protection watchdog asked OpenAI to stop processing the data of Italian residents, alleging that ChatGPT did not comply with Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

However, the ban could be temporary, as Italian regulators claim that OpenAI would bring ChatGPT back into GDPR compliance and then lift the ban.
